The AP four speed auto was/is absolute shit. The unreliability sank the Austin America in....America. The Mini and 1100 had a very good manual with a light clutch so an auto was a bit meh. Plus, parts are very scarce now. When it worked, it was sort of okay(ish) but fell far short of a good Borg Warner or GM.

The bigger BL cars (1800, 2200, Princess etc) had a Borg Warner 35 mounted in the sump, sealed from the engine and running its own fluid. They were pretty decent.

I converted an 1100 auto to a manual in 2005 - the car, FXF203H is sadly festering in Bloxham scrapyard.

TBH an auto working at all whilst sharing its lubricant with the engine is a minor miracle in itself given the number of potential blockage points there are seemingly in every autobox...

WTF!? I've driven both and you are massively over generous saying "very good". I'd rate them 6/10 (for rod change) and 5/10 for remote change, pretty average really.

Now the Hillman Imp on the other hand is 10/10 (we'll overlook the Rotoflex couplings as that isn't the gearbox itself)

That brown R16 is just lovely. First car I ever drove was a 1978 Renault 6 in that same colour scheme on Pendine sands. It was rotten then at 8 years old but I loved that little car and that is what appears to have kick started this habit I have.
