More work today. Battery charged and the car now starts by itself.

Gearbox definitely has issues engaging gears (especially reverse where the engine spins free and the car rolls forwards, before suddenly biting and jumping backwards) so an ATF change is on the cards.
12V straight to the fan did nothing, it was earthing so think it's completely duff. Relay clicks etc.
I am advised by a page admin of Volvo Owners UK on Facebook that the coolant temp sensors can be weak.

Won't have helped that the thermostat was jammed either.

stillOrange, did you put K-Seal through it? Was that for the old radiator or something? There was an empty bottle of it in the boot and a crust of something around the thermostat, that had also spilled out below the radiator top hose...

I remember carting an80’s iron Mitsubishi engine and five wheels in the back of my Astra. I got a frigging flat tyre on the way back, and had to get the spare out. I was rocking the engine and the back was spilling coolant and oil enough to warrant me replacing all the carpets.

I rolled the engine out onto a pallet supported by the wheels. It destroyed the plastic trim around the boot shut though!

I got the car with the K-Seal and it indeed was used on the old radiator as a stop gap before I got the new one.
I must say that never got to investigate the thermostat so not sure about the crust around it.
Is the housing in good shape?
The old radiator died when a part of it that was bodged by previous owner with some weird mouldable substance broke off.
I had some pictures of the "crust" found there in thread on AS. Wonder if its similar.

Having evaluated that the fan was dead, we cut it open, it turns out there's a dead capacitor in it, one of those rectangular ones. For the sake of a couple of quid we're going to try and resurrect it.

I've also found that the washer fluid reservoir leaks. This is a PITA as the bottle has a sensor that puts a warning light on. I think that'll need sorting for the MOT one way or another. Also, its lid is off a jam jar...

What make of jam? Robinsons should be ok, but Tesco value needs replacing.
