Skipscannerscan No.6

Some British Bully Beef at Netley Marsh Steam Rally sometime in the 1990s....Billy Coles was one of two families operating amusements around the South Coast, Hampshire and Dorset areas but like most others in the game has considerably scaled back in recent years. Not helped at all by the Chinese Flu, either.

Coles had their stuff in a field/yard at the south end of Ashington, about 1/2 a mile from where I lived. I went to school with one of the kids and he was a cunt.

Those pink lorries belonged to Billy Coles not the family from Sussex. There are two distinct families of showmen around here with that name and others across the South. I guess back when they may have been the same family but they are very keen to preserve their independence from each other. Billy is mostly retired now but I still see him about and he gets to a few shows with one of his preserved vehicles.

I scored very low on the autie test. I’m cheerful, happy, confident, like meeting new people, chatty and largely sociable. What the fuck am I doing on this forum?

My dad had a Monza red two door Cortina 1200 Deluxe BHV258C, pretty much the first of his cars I remember.

My dad had two Mk1 Cortinas, both were maroon and new. The first was a 1963 1200, I think he was influenced by my uncle buying a lime green Cortina earlier in the year, that was reg 576FLB. My dad's was 803YKO. Both of them traded in their 100E's. Coming home from our holiday at Butlins in 1964 we were sitting in a queue of traffic when some oiks in a beaten up Jowett Javelin for some unknown reason came out of a side road opposite and smashed into my dad's door. They duly incurred the wrath of my mum. Luckily there were plenty of witnesses. The second Cortina was a 1965 1200 Deluxe HLU523C, last seen in Sidcup in the mid-70's. Ironically we were on our way to the coast one day when 803YKO overtook us, think the second Cortina wasn't as lively as the first one. Strangely the Mk1 is the only Cortina that I have never driven.
