I heard they were shit.
Not compared to what was out at the time in 1990. The K series had just been released also which was a good engine back then.
I think they produced them for far too long, up to 1998 when the likes of the saxo etc were out. The'd also introduced ncap in 1999 in which they performed famously shit. On reflection so did the saxo iirc.
Think you are right about that, we had a povo 2 door at work and it was ashamed of almost every aspect of its identity except that it was a Sierra made by Ford.

I was selling them new at Mill when BMW pulled the plug. If they'd announced they were pulling the plug, the sales would have skyrocketed. Instead, BMW pulled the plug without announcement, over the Christmas break leaving a 15 week order book unfulfilled and no replacement in sight. Crazy. In Aug 1998 I had a list of people wanting to buy our last demo, a 114GSi, a lovely little thing.
Hydrasag suspension.
I remember the plush models had a lovely velour interior with big comfy front seats. I retro fitted a pair from a scrapyeard to a mk1 I had.
I scored very low on the autie test. I’m cheerful, happy, confident, like meeting new people, chatty and largely sociable. What the fuck am I doing on this forum?

They drove really well and had a very good quality interior. I loved them. Excellent engines, sharp steering, smooth ride.
Was only going by what a mate said about 15 years ago when a mate got one for a short while. Said it didnt like going round corners, things kept going wrong.
Nah, they go around corners like a Mini, but better. They could keep going wrong mind, they weren't high mileage motors unless meticulously maintained.
Probably you have hit the nail on the head there, ASB, loads of other small hatchbacks were of a type that shrugged off skimped servicing and owner abuse. I drove most of 'em in the early 80s and the Metro kept on improving despite only small appearance changes which is probably another reason why folk derided them. The balance of ride and handling was really quite remarkable when they came out and a decent one would still be a revelation to people raised on pointless "Nurburgring-ability" of modern shopping cars and their resultant arse-kicking ride.
Not to mention actually being able to see out of it.
