The law says that a vehicle and trailer can display different registration plates, but both plates must be registered to the same person at the same address.

Towing a trailer
Your trailer must display the same number plate as the vehicle you’re towing it with. If you’re towing more than one trailer, the number plate must be fixed to the trailer at the back.

I cite as supporting evidence those clever stainless spring clips fitted to trailers.
