WHAT? He was a boy (without a driving licence as it turned out years later) who was given a brand new, free car.

Talking about the 1979 XJ6 PH car on the Ebay thread has had me thinking about the more unusual cars that have been plated in my area.

A yellow 1982 Volvo 240GL may be a popular choice as a taxi elsewhere in the country, but only one was plated here. It was in great condition throughout its service though.

A 1985 Sierra XR4X4 was a somewhat strange choice for taxi usage. The lad who owned this drove it like there was no tomorrow!

One guy ran a brand new Rover 820i for a couple of years before replacing it with a 1988 Montego Turbo. We learnt how he managed to afford such cars after he tried to overcharge us on a trip home one Saturday night.

One lady driver ran a Pug 406 2.0 petrol turbo until the turbo died. She replaced it with a slightly more sensible Mk1 Mondeo 2.0 Si.

A lad we called One Bart, due to him looking like Bart Simpson and having the call sign Zero One, ran a Pug 605 2.0 Turbo petrol. He could afford to run that because he also worked as an oppo in the office and therefore qualified for a free set.

A Saab 9000 Turbo was worked with some success by one lad. He said it was OK on petrol if he didn't thrash it.

My Omega Elite 3.0 Petrol mentioned earlier.

A Subaru Impreza NA but dressed up to look like a turbo didn't last long. The lad even paid one of our Asian drivers to have his car retested so he could buy plate number 555 of him.

One lad who fancied himself spunked out on a BMW E36 328i estate and often gave several tenuous reasons for plating it.

An Alfa 166 2.0 lasted less than 6 months before vanishing in mysterious circumstances.

A couple of lads ran Orion Ghia Injections with the full RS bodykits with no obvious problems.

We briefly had a white 1981 Rover 2600 SD1 on the fleet that didn't end well for its driver.

The boss of one firm had a special order 1991 Granada Ghia saloon in 2.5 diesel spec, apparently, only one of six Ford ever made.

A 1996 Rover Sterling with the KV6 lump wouldn't be my first choice as a taxi but one lad managed to get two years service out of it before it had to be retired at eight years.

Wonder how many punters were disappointed that the 555 Subaru turned out to be a gutless NA when they asked the driver to give it some pillock

A virtual shag off my avatar if you can guess the Subaru design flaw that makes them a bad choice as a taxi. I'll give you a clue, it isn't anything mechanical.
