Surprised they weren’t galvanised or dipped in champagne from new. That sill looks like mid 70’s Datsun grade steel.

The shells were made by Pressed Steel so they're theoretically no more rust resistant than a Marina although the paint and undersealing at Crewe was pretty good.

Yeah I saw those tyres and too be honest I would rather run the Michelin Latitudes that some owners recommend than having more aged tyres on it. Mine is running 2003 tyres which you can feel are past their best. They may look fine but the rubber goes hard and they lose grip. On mine everytime I take it out after sitting in the garage you can feel they are very slightly out of shape until they warm up. The mot will change soon for all vehicles to include tyre age. They are bringing in a 10 year max on mini buses etc next year.

The tyres I took off the XJR recently were 2010 & 2007 dated, compared to new ones they were well past their best.

I remember going by PSF on a school coach trip and being horrified at Shadow bodies in the white just sat about on dollies out in the storage yard.....

I replaced 4 OE Dunlops on my Shogun with 6mm tread remaining as the hard gone hard. They were made in June 2012. Lethal. And the car is always garaged.

Got a bit more done on the Bentley today. Yesterday was cancelled due to and hang over so today involved replacing the seals and gaskets on the gearbox and getting it back in. The transmission jack was too tall to get the box out from under the car due to not being able to get full height on my ramp. I had to improvise a bit with an old shopping trolley and ratchet straps. Any way all sealed up and back in. Just the exhaust to refit now but my back has had enough for one day.

The big o ring around the pump is the main thing that leaks on these, new one fitted and all back in.

It is a hell of a lot of work just for a slight weep on the gearbox but now it is done it will hopefully have a few more years left in it.
