I think the larger one has a separate small engine you have to start up to use as a starter for the main engine.

The big maz has a 38.8 litre V12 diesel engine! Thats fucking enormous!! Imagine the mpg it gets, especially when hauling the trailer + load. The later versions apparently can pull a 65 ton load but I bet they often get used to exceed that, that huge trailer in the video I posted earlier looks pretty hefty!

I actually think it’s quite a nice looking truck too. In a huge brutish kind of way.

I’ve bought a 1/43 scale model of one btw! It’s coming from Estonia and made by a company I’ve never heard of before but it looks the dogs bollocks. Also bought a zil 131 fire engine (same type as the ones used for the Chernobyl accident) from the same manufacturer. That’s coming from Moscow though. I’ll put some pics up when they get here.
They’re probably the closest I’ll ever get to owning one!

38.8ltr? Sounds reasonable to me, after all its only slightly bigger than a Griffon Spitfire engine and those were single seater.

The MAZ-543 has a certain workmanlike appeal. You could even use it for tip runs; just drive through the height restriction as if it wasn't there. You could fit a few bin bags of lawn mowings in the little control room half way down the side of it:

Yes, they often had a big icbm or similar up on top, that’s why they’ve got that odd split cab design so the missile can sit down in between!
Most of these type trucks are used for all sorts of things though, rocket launchers, missile carriers, mobile control centres, engineers vehicles, aircraft tugs, tank/heavy haulage tractors etc etc.
