How to be an OLLI wanker

Post by panhard65 »

As you all may know I have been trying to replace my trusty Peugeot 806 for sometime as the trailer hire place I use only have 3.5t transporters and the old girl can't tow that much. I used to have 300tdi disco's and one P38 which was a great motor. I decided to go for another P38 but ended up with a heap that some how made me a profit when I punted it on. I tried a couple more P38 diesels and eventually came to the conclusion they were gutless heaps of shit and the one I had years ago must of been chipped. As 200tdi and even the 300tdi's are starting to go up in value I just couldn't bring myself to spend 2 grand on one as the bodies were rotten 10 years ago. Finally I tried a Disco 2 TD5. Ok they don't set the world on fire but go ok and can be bought cheaply. I bid on a few that were very scruffy and short mot's but kept getting out bid until I saw this thing. It is a 1999 so cheaper road tax and cheap dpf (although it has been removed) The seller had just had it mot'ed in July and had a complete rear section of chassis welded in. It looked a bit of a bargain for 1600 quid. Well now it is home time to see how bad the fucker is and set about correcting the olli bodges.

It looks better than it is and is a homemade job rather than a proper conversion. The back doors are welded up and they even left the central locking motors in them as you can hear them when you lock it. Overall though it isn't a bad job. The rear chassis isn't a bad job and has a brand new rear bumper as well. There is no tow bar but that is easy enough to sort. The exhaust is a straight through system with no dpf or silencers and it has that stupid tailpipe so that will be going in the skip. I have found a secondhand system (without cat) just down the road from me for 40 quid which I might go for if he will budge on the price. All the tyres are a bit low but will do for now but do need balancing as it has quite a vibration over 65. It drove home about 150 miles so can't be too bad although it has a puddle of something under it this morning and I really want it on the ramp before I drive it too hard.
How it passed an mot I don't know, the exhaust is pretty noisey with no silencers and the dpf isn't there. The more important fault is the ABS light doesn't come on. I plugged it in this morning and there is a front sensor fault and the shuttle valve fault. I will pull the dash out and investigate the light as I think the bulb has been pulled. It has had all new springs and shocks that give a 2" lift which I may keep but all the old ones are in the back, once I get it on the ramp I can make sure it has been done properly before making any decisions. I did have to bin the spare wheel cover though as that was just a bit too sad.

Er on a point of pedantry I don't think these had a dpf - my 2005 Disco 3 doesn't. May have had a diesel cat but that's not the same thing (unless I am useless at pedantry).

Does look a bit wankerish.
As I suspected I was right about everything.

I spoke to my mot guy and they aren't dpf's on these and as long as it passed emmisions he is happy for it not to there due to the age. I had the dash out and the bodge to hide the ABS light was pretty impressive. They didn't just put a bit of tape over the light they cut a small square of plastic to fit on the hole over the light then taped it down so it was very hard to find. Surprise surprise the ABS light is on all the time now but shouldn't be too hard to fix properly.

That's proper OLLI wanker spec. Now you just need to put some spotlamps on the front, taking a direct feed from the battery using speaker wire.

It does have LED spots on top of the roll bar so it is getting there. It also has a rear view camera with one of those bloody great things stuck over the rear view mirror. That is another job that needs doing as it is just a blue screen. I think I need bigger wheels and dumper tyres for the full wanker spec. I have ordered a new fuel gauge for the tank as it reads 3/4 when it is full and spoke to the factors about the exhaust and by the reg number it was never fitted with a cat so that's one less bit to worry about. Fingers crossed I can get a secondhand center and rear section exhaust so that horrid tailpipe can go in the bin.

Its actually one of the better pickup conversions I've seen, mind the worst was a completely flat RRC in a salvage yard, wouldn't let us near it as it had contained 3 fatals apparently

It should be cheap, half of it is missing.

I'm sure you know this, but td5s were on air not coils, so those old springs aren't originals either.

Is it just the abs light that is on? Often it's the abs, TC and hill descent otherwise known as the three amigos. A dodgy wheel bearing can set them off.
