I have ordered a solid state regulator.
Probably the best way to go, did you get an adjustable one? I have one I bought to regulate one gauge to 6v and the other wasn't happy unless it was about 9v so I built a little circuit board to do the same.

At the worry of sounding like a broken record, go get some DeOxit D100L, it's great stuff. It'll make the contacts better and makes them very much easier to put on and take off without fear of breaking pins.

If that regulator jammed on there's a chance it burned the gauges.

DeOxit ordered. The regulator I ordered isn’t variable but we’ll see how it goes. I have two sets of spare gauges in case these are dead.

I have a 50p one of these nailed on to the back of my van's instrument, all terribly sophisticated.

Don't tell the Vauxhall owners club, it's a hanging offence.

Could be worse, I've got this contraption on the back of my temperature gauge.

Tested and working (from 12v battery charger).

I also tried to check continuity - something is wrong between the boot of the car and the instrument connector. Found one connection, pulled apart and doused in the miracle stuff Phil A recommended. No dice - will have more of a look when I have more time.

Very neat. Nice to see an old printed circuit panel. Imagine the wiring and time that saved during assembly. So it now the wire between the sender and the panel that's sus?

Obviously because I don’t have enough badly done stuff on this car I decided to take a look at the leccy windows. Hey are slower than a dog with no legs.

I managed to remove the electric regulator. On the bench it displayed the same really slow operation in one direction only. I thought the reason it was slow to move the window in an upward direction was the obvious - the weight - but it seems there is more to it as the operation is the same with no load.

Then I noticed that someone has inexpertly welded a motor from something different into the regulator.

Dunno what to do about the windows - almost zero chance of locating original replacement parts and I don’t have much clue on how to do some proper replacement.

Yes - although the sender may yet turn out to be duff too.
