By the way, don't use too much. It needs a tiny tiny amount. I normally just tip the bottle up enough so the end of the needle drops a bit on the contact then use the side of it to spread it around a little.
I think there's a broken wire somewhere - or maybe another connection I haven't found yet.

Instrument panel finished - all bulbs checked, dead ones (and broken holders) replaced.

Now to see if I can trace the route of the fuel gauge feed. It goes into the loom as a yellow wire, appears at the connector next to the glovebox as yellow, then on the instrument multi-plug, still yellow. I know (see above) that there doesn't seem to be continuity between the boot at the glovebox connector - so I need to find where the loom goes and see if there's anything obvious - maybe another connector?

This revealed the loom as well as the two wires added for UK to allow for amber rear indicators which was a UK requirement.

No sign of damage or a connector so further back to the area to the side of the rear seat, after I worked out how to remove the trim panel/armrest.

Nothing exciting in this either - the tubes are the plastic pipes for the hydraulic lines to the hood rams.

Since I haven't buggered things up enough recently I decided to put the spare starter solenoid I got onto the car. Like a lot of things on this car, the original must've given up and instead of sourcing a correct replacement someone fitted a Lucas one. It didn't fit properly and was insecure so I decided I could return the car to original a little with a spare one I got from that AMC the banger racers had.

Ok, solenoid in place, starter cable too short (not by much but enough). Luckily I had a spare which was just a little longer fitted and all in order.

I put the instrument cluster back and the two gauges now work when the sender wire is grounded - so the “break” I was looking for in the fuel sender wiring wasn’t actually there after all.

No fuel indication using the actual sender so I think the next thing is to try earthing the sender. i.e.run a separate earth to it to ensure it has a good earth.

Probably worth putting a test meter across the sender to earth, you should get some sort of resistance showing.

I tried that using the wire in the boot but if the thing isn’t earthed properly that won’t work. It should be physically ok I think, it’s not so long since I fitted it along with the tank from the spares car.

Will see when I get a minute. My daughter’s here this week so it won’t be soon :)

Partial victory.
Not easy to see due to my mad photo skillz but the temp gauge is now operational.
