Stripped this down again it was getting really bad and braking hard was shaking the steering wheel and making some horrible noises. We both agreed it was the drivers side so that was the one I took to bits. I dremmeled all the spring clips and holders, regreased them and put them back. I found a sticky slider on the calliper so exercised that and freed it off. There didn't seem a way to remove it unless I cut the boot.
Putting it back together I noticed the disc has warped. It's only done two tank fulls of fuel on these discs and pads so this has pissed me off. I have a mate who's a cnc turner in a fab shop and he's skimmed them for me for nowt in the past but that'll mean it's off the road till he does it.
Partial win anyway and I'm pleased I've found what's caused it. Little victories and all that.

I think the knackered slider may have fucked it. Overheated it maybe. The calliper itself was free.
Not sure on price, they were the first that came up on ebay.
Just had a look, premium ones are £43. Loads of sets for less than £40.

It's up to 380 miles on this tankfull with two bars left to go.

It probably was the stuck slider but make sure the mounting face is nice and clean before fitting the new discs.

53.7 mpg from the last tank. A lot better considering it's been loaded up and used for work. Chuffed.

The power steering is notchy on the mx5 for the first mile or so. Is that the rack on it's way out? There's plenty of fluid in it. Is the pump ran off the alternator belt?
I also need to do something with the throttle. There's no play at all in the pedal which makes low speed maneuvering a bit jerky. Also the idle speed is a bit high. I wonder if the throttle cable is a bit tight.
A job for this afternoon then.

Edit, power steering pump has it's own belt and it's quite slack. Good news.

It's an early one iirc? If so it's a screw on the intake part that you adjust for the idle. Google will tell you where to adjust.

I'm having trouble not driving it for long enough to have a look.
