I can't see anything obvious with the cams, they both turn as normal. I'm inclined to put it down to a duff belt.

timing belt and water pump replaced, started first turn of the key
note the cunning use of spanners and mole grips to hold those cams in place while I fitted the belt, dipstick down plug one to confirm tdc
all bled up and ready to hoon
bonny colours

and the Exo rewarded me by refusing to start
after panicking over the electrics having gone bad, I had a cuppa and a think and traced the problem to the fuel pump - there was power at the pump but no action.
naughty pump
to test this theory, I robbed the working pump off the mx5
and it fired tight into life
so a trip was made to see the mazdadudes at darlo and I came back with a used one
which I fitted and annoyed the neighbours

I do like those locking tools, reminds me of when I used cableties on the XJR to keep the chains located on the sprockets.

time for a bit of an update - it's been a bit of a busy week
battery fixed in place (temporarily, I plan to buy a smaller battery and move it to the other side at some point)
wiring tray lid wrapped in fake carbon for extra bhp
omg £££ wheel spacers finally arrived
no more rubbing here
brakes and clutch bled
back on terra firma
not much clearance here
lowering springs may have to be changed to normal springs
a bit more wiring done
handbrake fitted and adjusted

engine sounds a bit tappety (watch out for that fiesta !)
I've since given it an oil flush and it's calmed right down
