Today's episode on what Jay Leno doesn't do.

Two fucking cripples of the GGG, one with mayonnaise in his lungs, the other with a serious ailment, set about to tackle a service on the conveyance destined to do a trip to France in the near future by heading northbound from where it is now to get to Dover, an idea only my resident donkeys could possibly come up with.

English oil was poured into a French gearbox.

What came out beforehand wasn't really deemed replaceworthy.

I have this funny notion that this step in car maintenance is going to be largely neglected in future.

Engine oil was also replaced. This includes a heavily scene taxed oil filter made in Italy with the first animal pictured on it that springs to mind when it comes to Italy and/or oil filtration (delete from your boggled mind whichever you deem mindboggling).

What came out of the sump, however, wasn't smelling nice, lemme tellyas.

There has been a return to good old 20W50 with ZDDP because the book says so and the engine was rattling in a rather unnerving manner for two seconds after firing it up after a Month's worth of being dormant.

Needless to mention that all start up attempts after said oil change lead to severe Exxon Valdesisation of my garden due to us being daft enough to catch the oil pressure switch cable between what is supposed to be a snug oil filter seal/oil filter seating area interface.

This is the most complementary thing that I remember you saying. Either my memory is going or your attitude to your acolytes is softening (with old age?).

Is it coincidence or magic that your oil cans have crap classics on the front? Who is Miner Al?

It wasn't that difficult, really. You could have done it.
It's fascinating how every detail of the car is carefully designed to be as service unfriendly as possible. There must be some truth to French mechanics having more joints in their fingers, smaller hands and three of them.

I think it has something to do with graphic designers nowadays having university degrees.
Weirdly said crap classic in this case happens to be the 1956 Cadillac Eldorado Town Brougham concept car.

It's funny when your nice new oil goes all over the floor. Tell me you saw the funny side of it.

I brought some choice tyres back from Wales for you.

Ooooh, My Vintage Tyre©! Bloody excellent!

Anyway, my life has hit its latest low spot by me posting a photo of my old sparking plugs on the internet.

Image

Adopting some British custom of understating things, I say I'm not really that impressed by their condition.

Valve clearances were checked and adjusted.

Image

Rocker cover, gasket and cylinder head are designed for maximum frustration when trying to put everything back together.

We then changed he points and condenser and adjusted the ignition as good as we could.
After all this, I found yet another thing I hate about that modern tat. The R16 now runs significantly better than before, exactly as you would expect after you serviced your car. I did the very same thing on one of the 405s recently and it just ran exactly as perfectly as it did all the time before I serviced it. How bloody annoying is that?
