Yes. Well mostly. C Class rear subframes rust nicely. That gen E Class is a decent car, E240 petrol is the best bet.

The problem is, speaking as a warranty engineer, the wiring looms and the like are sub contracted to the lowest cost producing nation. The components, material and build are generally shit so when there is a problem, the car is approaching scrap value.

From a short term business perspective it makes sense. You need to take into account residuals for a few years so that it remains valuable enough so that lease rates don't get hammered. After that they're not bothered about the later users in my opinion.
Whilst I was qualifying I worked in a biscuit factory. The ingredients of a biscuit were calculated to something like a tenth of a penny.

Think the 107E was just a stop-gap until the Consul Classic was ready (not that those had a great innings either) and ran alongside the 100E "New" Popular which in itself only existed as a "lowest priced car" loss-leader. A surprising number still about, probably because the engine and transmission lasted more than 40,000 miles.......

Sidevalve Ford club is pretty active and there's always plenty to be seen at shows. I might be wrong but I think an oil filter was an optional extra. Proper mingebag motoring.

Ford were perverse in those days. They build two 1172 sidevalve engines in the fifties that had very few common parts. The cheaper one lacked replaceable crank bearing shells, oil and air filtration, lacked proper crankcase ventilation and even a water pump. Heres one I endured earlier.

100E's, Zephyrs 1-3, Classics etc were the last properly built Fords. From the 105E onwards they just seemed to be rot boxes. Escorts were terrible.

I'm always amazed how solid derelict 100Es often are. The vans and estates seemed to suffer more, though.

Another car I can vouch for as being built to impossibly high standards yet using old tech is the Burnaston-built Toyota Avensis (petrol).
