Last cross ply tyres I know of were originals on my Ma's 1972 Mk1 Escort 1100L.
Her 1967 Arrows Minx had them too.

I started googling about Moskvich 412s as I reckoned they might be a good bet but then got distracted by the cost of this book -

Dare I ask why they don't like radials? too much grip so they might roll rather than slide?

I delivered a brand new T reg poverty spec Viva which was factory fitted with crossplies. It was going into a hire fleet in 1979, though it might have been kicking around for a while. Checking the oil on another new Vaux I was getting out of the distributors compound at that time a sapling had struggled up to the top of the engine towards the crack of light through the generous bonnet panel gap...
Back to that red Viva, I recall how badly the thing tramlined on those tyres, and how ancient the cabin seemed. Thin rubber mats on the floor, drivers sunvisor only, and the oblong speedo with long wavering needle. It was housed in a clumsy symmetrical dash for easy swappage with the glovebox lid for lhd; you have to admire the company's optimism.
7 years before I'd taken my test in the previous generation coke bottle Viva, they'd gone backwards with this one.

Had to edit this, I see I put radials instead of crossplies. Better than GM doing it the other way round though.

Radials were never recommended for P4 Rovers at one time. I've seen them fitted in more recent years but I never knew the argument against them for that specific car.

Sounds like a Viva "E" - a proper hair shirt of a car. Sort of like the Ladas commies got instead of the bourgeois export models.

It made the already heavy steering ridiculous. When I had mine I changed the radials for Barum crossplys, it was like night and day. Much better on the Barums. I’d have loved to try one on quality crossplys. I enjoyed both of the P4s I owned.

And speaking of Ladas....The Niva is being replaced with a new model for 2021. I bet the outgoing version (sold here as the Cossack) contained a few "lasts" into recent years.

OK cheers. Makes sense, my Farina was nicer on the rock-hard crossplies although it drifted a bit on dual-carriageways.....
