I feel I'm qualified to give an honest opinion! I really did like the 1.4 octavia. The 1.0 engine was useless though. I'd never have a new auto ford with the stupid 7 or 8 speed box and 1.0 engine. No where near what they are cracked up to be

I’ve only bought one new car.

Having had 6 Subaru STis and 1 WRX, it was the last STi.
I’d had a 2005 STi which I bought for $21k and had 23k on the clock. Drove it for 3 years and got it to 92k miles.

Traded it for a brand new 2015 launch edition STi and got $18k. That would have been a great deal but at 85k it needed a new clutch, which added $800 to the general cost of ownership.

Ran the launch edition for just over 3 years, selling it with 89k on the clock for a $14k loss.

I normally buy lower miles 3-5yr old cars, but if there had been a new STi, I would have bought that. Still no new version hence the used Lexus coupe and now the Jag.

Subaru STis seem to hold their money as long as they are sub 100k miles. The only better cars in the US to hold their money tend to be trucks!

It was nice having a car with a warranty and not having to worry about it stranding you in Arctic conditions somewhere.

My new to me Jag, lost over $50k in 5 years (12k miles) for its previous owner. Now that’s depreciation!

Yeah, I bought my car brand new. My excuse is that it's a work purchase and I'll be left with an asset when I have finished paying for it. It's the only new car I have ever bought.

The only other new cars that I've had were part of a job package. An XR3i, E985AVX, when I was 18 and flogging fax machines followed by various Vauxhalls whilst working as a nasty bailiff. Later on, I had a few Fords, a Mk3 Fiesta, Mk1 Mondeo diesel and a Granada 2.5Di Executive.

Never really wanted to buy a new new car TBH, I did get closer to buying a brand new Honda XR 250 when they released the year 2000 models on a rediculas dealer special could have had it OTR for about £2k.
If it had been a 4 or 600 I would have done but just couldn't get excited enough about the 250.

I've had two brand new ones. A 2001 Corsa got £2500 off it with a GM credit card farther in laws friend had. Got rid of it 4 years later as bits were always going wrong.

Sold it for the Fiesta ST that we still have. It was about £14,000 double the price of a base spec one but we remortgaged and it was a 'we'll not be able to afford one in future' type thing. I won't be selling it but I can see Mrs Shrimp wanting something different when it's needing welding.
I'm not against a new car, even though I'd prefer an old one, but there's something to be said for a hybrid or even full electric. Not bothered about the infamous depreciation as everything you buy looses money.

I'm lucky enough to have lost money on two houses, so it is possible. I'm probably in the wrong place to be saying that I don't get too hung up on depreciation, but then I have only ever really bought cheap new cars, 50% depreciation over three years isn't that bad when the new car only cost £6k .
