The Crappy Hamper Thread

Post by mercrocker »

So that we keep the other threads relatively free of bed-ridden portaloos I thought we could put all camper, caravan and tent-related stuff in here, a bit like the back of the shed we only get to one hot weekend a year in the search for the missing bit of water-carrier hose.

To kick it off, I apologise for the immediate VW content but it's all I have. Sorry/fuck off as appropriate.

I bought this to replace a Bedford CF ambulance some 15 years or so ago. Yes, I know a CF is betterer in our eyes but mine wasn't. It was fucked and the prime need of a campervan is to camp Somewhere Else other than outside the house.

It has no name, just Van, and is a 1.9DG water-cooled flat-four T25 of 1987 vintage. Conversion was by Richard Holdsworth and involves a side-fitting unit of finest MFI-board comprising, sink, two-ring cooker, grill and cupboards. 3/4 width "rock and roll" bed, space for a potty and two seats up front.

Pics just to give you an idea of the basic level of miserableness involved in a camper van....

It will cruise at 70-75, is very pleasant to drive (all the mechanical racket of a cement-mixer in a washing machine is projected rearwards) and I suppose the longest time between our own comfy bed at home has been 10-12 days or so. It really is a mobile beach hut as we tend to spend summer days down the local beach. The factory hightop suits me as although access is denied to pikey-barred car parks we have loads of extra storage for bedding, folding chairs and the like that would otherwise have to be lugged out of the house each time - something that gets very tedious.

We did have a 1960s folding caravan but I got fed up with towing it and paying for yet another garage. I have a good storage deal for the van over the winter which keeps it out of the worst of the weather and means it can come off tax for a few months a year - basically I lay it up at the first sign of salt and get it out sometime between now and Easter, weather depending.

Feel free to add your own misery/bile/ridicule/yearnings as necessary....
There's a great long bar in Rock & Roll heaven.......

Here's a start to mine after a 3 year restoration, some of which was caused by the difficulty of getting parts as VW decided to change some 7 months after production started and 1 month after it was built. The only continent I didn't buy parts from was Antartica.
If you don't like the interior tough shit. I built it and my missus did the upholstery.

I love a bit of vintage dub and I’m not afraid to say it. Lovely pictures from you both btw.

I looked at a couple of T25s, a Nissan and a Bedford MIDI , last year at what I thought was the height of Covid price craziness- all rotten, all damp . I left an offer on one VW that was up for £5995 and the roof gutters had rotted away. I thought £5k was reasonable, the bloke clawed me as I was driving home to say someone had bought it unseen for the asking price!
One of my brothers has a Sprinter he’s into about £12,000 so far and it’s not quite finished, I am not going that route.
One day aSherps with a Montego Turbo D lump and no rust will turn up fo £2000...

Just to spoil the VW love I have only ever owned one camper and it was awful to drive. I used to drive Marina vans and they were fine but the seat on this thing was just too far forward and not adjustable so the only distance it ever went was the trip home from buying it. I did try camping out in it in the back garden and that sealed it's fate. Flogged off at a loss and it ended up in the James Hull collection that went to Jaguar Land Rover, then sold at auction a few years ago so it is still alive and providing shit transport somewhere.

Mine was a project that ran away, the sort where it'll only cost a bit more to fix it and then more terminal rust is discovered. Even the engine rebuild went awry, everything seemed fine until it was put back together when the oil pressure dropped to 5psi when it was warm. I can't remember the reason but we had some detailed discussions as to why. So that was another 800 notes for a new case.

Mine was fucking appalling to drive originally.
It took quite a few Bob and hours to get it to where it is now.
I would have got rid if I didn't think that it could be fixed.

I've never had a camper of any sort, no ever gone in a camper either. I also hate mobile home things you see about with a passion. Find them ungainly enorumous and utterly pointless things.

I've slept in a tent a number of times. Don't particularly like it much but my missus does.

However I quite fancy something like these:

Image
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1970-Volkswa ... 3886320914

Just happened to be ones close to me when doing a quick search. Both way more than I'd want to pay though.

I'd also be quite happy not to convert them into campers. More of a day van, that I can sit in eating my sandwiches while watching the world go by for an hour. So basically like the above but with better seats to sit in the back with a table - because I'm a messy bugger and get crumbs all down me otherwise.

I also don't like tea, so I don't even need a hob. But the missus does, so maybe a kettle. Maybe a fridge so I can have a nice cool Apple Juice or something.

If stopping somewhere it'd be a hotel. Maybe we'd keep a popup tent in the boot to pull out for a night stop. But then I'd be a grumpy shit for the rest of the day as I'd have been woken up early, tired, with my back killing me.

Basically living the dream.

Thinking about it, left hand drive is probably a plus point, as I'd likely be humming around the continent in it just as much in the UK.

Even more reason to stop in a hotel as I'd need the aircon room to cool back off.

What are they like price wise in America? Surely the things are still plentiful over there being both imports from Europe and Brazil.
