Yesterday I entered the final stages of re-assembly. I wanted to clean up the rocker gear, which breaks down into two halves, before re-fitting.

I particularly wanted to inspect the oilways as these can get blocked or restricted if the engine has been neglected. I need not have worried, as they were all clean and in any case their large size meant it would take a lot for them to clog up.

The only damage I could see was this, but as it was smooth anyway I just ignored it.

Which means, with the cylinder head torqued down, the only thing left to re-fit was the rocker gear. I came very close to getting to start the engine, but as it was already dark I called it a draw.

Putting together clean engine bits is always a pleasure, if you can ignore the pain caused by working stooped over carry big lumps of metal obviously!
Looking forward to hearing it going.

Thank you, I'm fed up of back ache now and it taking me 5 minutes to be able to stand up straight.

More grand progress, this thread is one of the main reasons I still frequent TDW. Hopefully I shall get the opportunity to see the Humber in the metal at some point once it's back together.

Not entirely relevant but I saw this image today and it just made me think of Mr Dawson's calm and eloquent attitude towards car maintenance.

I like the old style capitalisation in the picture.
Different times, most people don't even know where the bonnet release is nowadays.

Like my Cowley it has already lived through Bay of Pigs, IRA and Thatcher. As long as someone is still left breathing to push pedals and turn wheels....
