Will it rock in 4th gear (or 3rd if it's a 3 speed) to see if there is any movement?

You might care to try hot oil in the bores.
Wipe the worst of the diesel out, heat the oil to thinking about smoking, any engine old will do (even used!).
Need a way to get the oil out of the bores after before you try turning the crank - I use a metal syringe.

I will try engaging top gear and pushing the car forwards. Certainly there was no engine movement when I used the gears to stop the car in lieu of brakes.

Placed an order with Autosparks for a Humber Snipe overdrive harness and the other wires I need. Weighing up the o.d. unit although the gearbox has been drained of oil it looks clean inside and I'm hopeful it'll work again after all this time. Also been dismantling, cleaning and packing the front wheel bearings/hubs, one side down, one to go. Quite a simple job really as they're taper roller bearings on a stub axle. It didn't feel rough or sluggish before I did the work but it could've been 30 years since they were last done, and the wheel does seem to turn a little more freely now.

On the overdrive front my MGB overdrive hasn't been used in about 15 years due to being off the road. Do they seize up from lack of use or whatever do you know?
Thanks.

I don't think so, main problems encountered seem to be electrical, which are simply rectified. Scrupulous cleanliness is imperative when draining and topping up the unit because even tiny particles of grit or lint from a rag can cause trouble with the hydraulic system. They are quite reliable units and were fitted to many cars of the past, but like many things they get neglected over time and problems start.

My MGB was sat from 2003ish to 2017. Oil in the gearbox is the same afaik and nothing was done to the transmission to awaken it. Overdrive kicks in fine.

Gearbox was hard to engage and pretty stiff at first. The more it was used the better the shift got. Now it's the proverbial rifle bolt.
