I noted the thermometer on the Snipe showed the coolant wasn't reaching its proper temperature. Immediately I blamed the thermostat, but left it overnight and ran the car out again today to see if there was any change (suspected it was stuck open). No change, still running cool so I removed the thermostat. It wasn't stuck fully, or even half, open, but a tiny piece of cylinder block casting had jammed the valve open about one-sixteenth of an inch. It was quite difficult to remove too given the clamping effect of the spring. Funny what a tiny piece of foreign matter can do.

The next issue is the misfire which has worsened and is now unbearable. This is restricting accelleration as the engine is being held back, and if I open the throttle too quickly with the engine cold pulling in gear the engine skips and backfires through the carburettor. After ruling out the ignition side of things (and I even put the old HT leads back on to see if there was a difference), doing a compression test (150, 160, 140, 150, 150, 150 lbs/sq. in. 1 to 6) I turned to the carb itself. I dismantled and cleaned it a year ago so wasn't expecting any horrors. It was fine and the accellerator pump is working as it should. The only thing of note occured when I removed the main jet. Part of the rubber sealing ring was missing. Last year I had to fit the original perished one over the generic O ring supplied with the kit as it was woefully undersize and allowed petrol to pour out on its own (I won't be using that supplier again as it's not the first time the parts have been totally unsuitable). So the missing piece could be within the carb somewhere.

I hate changing parts willy-nilly on the off chance they might be the source of the fault, but as I have a spare carb which is untouched since taking it off the donor, will give that a go if the bad running is still present. Cars can be infuriating at times.

Is this the start of ethanol shenanigans or just shite parts? Both are conspiring against us.....

I'm not sure about ethanol. I've so far dismissed the potential threat but with it coming to forecourts in September it's brought the threat closer to home and has disturbed me.

A lot of our fuel is already E5 & has been for years.

I'll avoid E10 when it arrives as on the occasions I've used it abroad in my bike it's run worse & got a lot lower MPG. That much worse MPG that it's more expensive to use the cheaper fuel, if you see what I mean.

Esso super unleaded is still 0% ethanol according to their website. Says E5 on the pump handle but that's because E0 isn't a valid sign.

Local Esso was 137.9p/l for it though, versus 122.9p/ for regular in the same station or 117.9p/l at the supermarkets for regular. So a fair bit pricier on the wallet, but probably cheaper than fuel system problems - depending how much the vehicle gets used.

It's this foisting all manner of shit upon us under the 'green' banner that pisses me off; ethanol is big time environmentally damaging as it comes from intensive monoculture agriculture, none of its proponents give a fuck about the planet except where they can jet off or sail to next on their super-luxury yachts. May they all spontaneously combust, the evil money-grubbing shits.

Still plenty of recommissioning work left to do but it's been on the back burner and likely to remain there for some time. But, if our masters allow car rallies this year I'd like to take it to at least one.

I had my suspicions about something LIKE this, when Squire very generously sent me some spares for my MK3 Escort in the mail post - FOC - with beautiful, joined up writing on the envelope.

I expected it to be a low spec MK2 with the round lamps in oily rag.

This. THIS. Something else.

It is the only 'good' Ford I'd ever want. If my numbers came up (which they won't, I don't play) then I'd not think twice.
