The series version seems ever so common though judging by the number of 90s or 110s I see on tax exempt plates...

It is amazing how many Series LRs got built originally* on Defender chassis with coil springs, Tdi engines etc etc.

The Renault 5 gearbox oil cooler issues might be resolved.

The new cooler should have longer bolts, but there were a few threads of the old ones poking through.

New washers and o-rings fitted and bolted up.

No signs of leaks so a quick test drive was taken.

Engine temp got too high and funny noises emanated from the coolant system. It appeared to need a good burping.

I had changed the gearbox oil but it needed a wee bit more topping up.

Second longer test drive went well. Kick down working and no sign of slippage. No leaks at the cooler either.

Hopefully the oil is circulating round the cooler ok.

A few pics while it's still working.

Nice little car, other than the wheels! If you ever have cause to weld the rest of the sill, be very careful. There are wires in one side, thanks Renault.

I'll put the DB 996 updates here for my own future reference.

After discovering thin oil, I dropped the sump and cleaned the oil pick up filter. Some shiny bits piqued my curiosity so popped a big end bearing cap off for a look-see.

The shells are fubared. Crank looks scored but there are no ridges that I can feel.

I think that crank might polish up ok especially if you can't feel anything, have seen far far worse shells.

On the positive side tractor bits are usually cheap!
