Your assumption is correct, my problem is that I had always liked the look of them when I was young, but waited until I was too old to suffer for style before buying them.

Mk3 Cortina.

Drove 'em new, drove 'em with 200,000 miles on the clock. Absolutely no difference.

No, that does not mean that shagged ones drove mint, either......

Mk4s were better but so was a Cavalier, Fiat 131, Peugeot 504, Morris Ital...OK Maybe not the Ital but you get the idea.

Marina 1.8. Bought one to Banger Rally. Realised I'd kill myself before getting as far South as Durham let alone Bucharest. And it was in bloody good nick. Horrendous.

BMW 3 series estate. Literally nothing fits in one. Might as well have a coupe to be honest.

I found my E36 estate to be sure on luggage space. See the photos in here of my holiday trip. That was two adults,1 dog,a few fishing tackle bits and 11 days luggage. Roof rack stacked and boot couldn't open with out stiff falling out. Also back seat was stacked too!

I can vouch for an S212 E-class wagon for practical space. Get over the senior sales manager image, and a 6pot diesel will see you right for life.

Our only foray into mercedes ownership was a w210 E200 estate auto. Rough, slow, thirsty and wouldn't pull the foreskin off a badger. Mrs hated it and declared never again!

My Z3 in the wet as it feels like your driving a 2.8 Capri on remoulds hitting black ice while going flat out around a roundabout.

But then saying that I took a look at my rear tyres yesterday and although there’s plenty of meat on them the things are a pair of mismatched Chinese death rings that have been on the car long before I bought it years ago and are starting to crack so it looks like some decent midrange tyres are needed but it has a brilliant engine as it’s got a M44 four pot which I think is very underrated.

Saab 900 Turbo 16S
My boyhood dream car. When I eventually got one I didn't like it, the engine is fantastic, but it had the handling of an oversized jellyfish. I kept it for around 2 years trying to like it, but I never did.
