All series Land Rovers are utter wank. And I've driven and sold loads. None were enjoyable.
As for the comment regarding the 54 plate Shogun not have steering feel. Its because of the tyres. OE ones are fleet spec and guaranteed for 100km in some markets.

Peugeot 106. Terrible. Even the autos. How Peugeot thought they could replace the 205 with that is beyond comprehension.

Until you select low ratio and second gear. Then point them at anything.AutoshiteBoy wrote: ↑Wed Jun 12, 2019 8:16 pm All series Land Rovers are utter wank. And I've driven and sold loads. None were enjoyable.

I sold Shotguns as new cars in 1995. That was the second gen. Many were sold to disgruntled LR owners who'd had enough and they always drove well to me.The 3.0 V6 was a cracking engine, good automatic box and they were so tough and reliable. With the Galant as well as the Space Star MPV it's odd how Mitsutoshi never got a bigger slice of the market. The 1992 onwards Space Wagon was an excellent MPV and we could sell used ones for well over book, and new ones for full list.
When you took a five year old Range Rover as p/x, you realised how inferior they were, a loosely assembled collection of BL bits in close formation. Not the evil P38 but the previous 3.5 Vague.

I used to maintain a 1978 88 inch Land Rover, even down to periodically repainting the wheels. It was the blue colour, a well loved one owner diesel and quite superb for what it was meant for. It was when LR tried to make a pigs purse out of this magnificent silk sow that it all went tits up.
A blue petrol 88 Series IIa or Series III for me.

All mk3 and onwards escorts. Astra was far superior.
Xantias. Those trailing arm bushes.
Alfa 147. I seemed to spend every weekend fixing it.

Escort XR3
Where do I start...well the 5 occasions I drove I ran out of lucky heather and lucky rabbits feet..
Slow, unresponsive, engine sounded strained, handling that only seemed to turn the steering wheel only..and this was allegedly a good example.

Land Cruiser, the proper big fucker VX or Amazon whatever.
I've always liked these since the early 90's ones. Often seen towing posh bogs or massive boats, they must be some machine, I thought.
Their reputation as tough, reliable, unbreakable etc.
Things like the Aussie saying;
" if you want go into the bush, take a Land Rover.
If you want to come back, take a Land Cruise"
Etc, etc.
Then a couple of years ago I went to Kuwait and my hosts lent me a Lexus LX570, what a dissapointment.
Creaky, slow and felt more like an old Cherokee or a HiLux than a Range Rover. It'll probably still be going long after same age Land Rovers have collapsed into a rusting heap, but there is no way I'd want to pay anything like the crazy values they retain.
And off-road it felt like a leaf sprung Land Rover, it'll go anywhere but feels awful, none of that feeling of flowing across rough ground that a coil or air sprung Solihul machine has.
Ok, so I'm a bit of a LR apologist, but even I accept they're a liability, that's why my Mrs drives a 2011 ML instead of a same price 2008/9 Range Rover, I still wouldn't buy a Land Cruiser and that makes me a little sad.
This is the only picture I can find of it, complete with Mrs N, looking bored in the desert.
