If you can live with the stupid keycard and the occasional* electrical issue, not much beats a Laguna Two for ride comfort.

I lost one of mine between locking the bastard and my front door, all of 10 yards, never ever seen again. I took to leaving the other one under the drivers seat and never locking it on the basis that nobody would steal it. 2004 pre facelift 1.9 DCI Sports Tourer, such a great car and utterly reliable. The bits that did fail (window regulators) were so piss easy to fix that it made rubbish like the BMW E46 an utter scandal in comparison.

I was never impressed with the ride or seats in mine, it seems very average.

This has two brand new genuine Renault keycards, so hopefully they'll be good for a while longer. Interestingly the Renault dealer they were bought from couldn't figure out how to program them into the car. Dealer had only been around for a couple of years, so I guess none of the, fresh out of college, mechanics had done it before.

Ended up going to a specialist who struggled. They first blamed it being on Chinese fake keys. Kinda understandable as I suspect most Renault owners of 16yr old examples will balk at £150 per key. Also they are a different style and design to the originals. Of course as they were from Renault dealer and came from France, they were not. Turned out the fuse next to the OBD port had fallen out.

The car does very flimsy. Especially noticeable coming out of the A4 or even the Boxster. But then the A4 is a ten year newer design. Boxster was over double the price of the Laguna too. Got the invoice for the Laguna - £16k from Saga Cars Direct. Iirc the Boxster started around £32k for base, but then once you added common options such as climate, wind deflector, sports wheel and a few more options it came to nearer £37k.

I liked mine a lot while I briefly had it. A very tidy DCi estate. Just after the MoT it broke a spring while on the driveway then the day after when I went shopping the tailgate wouldn't open, then without warning the clutch started to slip. This was all in one week. I decided to break it up, it just seemed destined to be a pain.

Shame though, I liked the car initially.

About 8 or 9 years ago I started specialising in the bloody things and had loads of them. To start with they were good earners as they always looked modern and made good money. Then the car buying public worked out how shit they were and I started breaking them. I still have some bit's left around here somewhere.

The only things it really needs is the satnav cd drive that lives in the glove box and the back left window regulator has stopped working. A big blank satnav screen in the middle is really rather irritating! Not least the stereo doesn't work. I guess you don't have one handy in the pile of bits?

I personally think these are pretty good cars of the era, once you get the electrical issues tamed. Much rather have this than a Mondeo MK3 with its petrol oil rings, diesel injectors/pump, DMF, rear calipers, etc. Passat of this era is supposed to be the reliable workhorse, which it is if unstressed on the motorway. However window regulators, door locks, scuttle filling with water are all pains. Then rough roads causing big bills to fix the fiddly suspension.

I probably have a window reg but the sat navs were all sold. I might still have a standard head unit kicking around. I am up in Bristol again in a couple of weeks time and could bring the window regs I have got up. I doubt I labeled them but fairly sure there will be a couple or rear ones there.

Do you happen to know if the satnav CD readers are compatible cross part numbers if swapped around? There are ones that match the one in the car but are 70quid. Identical looking ones from a slightly later Laguna can be have for 25 quid but have different part numbers.

I reckon the one in the car was killed by the RAC swapping batteries around without waiting the 45 seconds from ignition off to let the system shutdown. The keypad section is flashing the backlights, which according to the Renault technical note is unable to talk to the CD reader.

No idea on the sat nav I just flogged them under part number. These things are a nightmare with the electronics with some that don't need the key card inserted and others that were keyless (that might of been the poxy megane now I come to think of it). I have a few card readers kicking about I think and at least one hazard switch as they were really popular. I have a few headlights as well both normal and xeon but may not have any resistors left.
