Re: Roland's trials and tribulations
I know the valve stems are kippered, like to smoke at tickover. Head gasket has been suspect for a while too which will be replaced when valve stem seals are done. It was the ominous bottom end knock and loss of pressure that was the most daunting

No harm taking it apart to look then. At least you'll be able to price repairing it more accurately.

Re: Roland's trials and tribulations
As people more knowledgeable than me have said, take it apart.
It's unusable at present so you've got nothing to lose and you never know if might not be as bad as you think.

That's looking the idea. As I've said that was originally my plan but thought I'd look for another lump to use for now and then rebuild the old engine at my leisure ready for the heavy use next year but still able to do the little bits of running around I use it for now.

Re: Roland's trials and tribulations
I'd do that too, but what would happen if Daz did the same?
You're welcome!
It'll take up a load of space/time and even if you have those it'd still be fucked.
A complete lottery, but your best bet bar bailing out on it.
Apart from the cost, I could see a perfect rebuild lasting a month or two and the motor putting a leg out of bed. It'll all end in tears with your legendary luck. If you want a short-cut to the feeling, burn a wad of fifties in the fire.

A set of shells and a crank grind is going to be required with the knocking and loss of oil pressure. I'm out of touch but I would guess about £200 there? You'll need a full gasket set anyway, rings you could reuse, stem seals should cure the smoke on start up for a while unless the guides are absolutely knackered.

Re: Roland's trials and tribulations
Owned the trike for 18 months, this is the first major malfunction it's had. It's the most reliable vehicle I've owned and has never cost much in all honesty. Even passed 2 mot at my hands bar obviously servicing and a set of tyres. The engine in it is 31 years old and the previous owner who fitted it said it was an unknown engine so it's managed well. I think I'll just rebuild the thing. Do it in stages so it's not going to cost too much outright. I have stripped and rebuilt numerous bikes but it seems to be my cars that cause me grief hence why I've gone to motability to lift a strain of worry.Eddie Honda wrote: ↑Wed Jul 10, 2019 11:25 amI'd do that too, but what would happen if Daz did the same?

Dodgerover, shells are just under 50 quid a set. Crank regrind I'm unsure of the cost but I do know am head skim is 40 quid. If I want to go the whole nine yards though I can get new rings, pistons and liners for 360 quid. Send the liners and block to am engineering firm to get it all fitted. Without taking the head off I can't obviously say if the bores are worn visually but I'm trying to borrow a compression tester off my friend to see what's what. It's definitely going to have a head skim, head gasket and I'm pretty sure shells are kippered.

There were several dead [running] Rialtos in Vlies scrapyard in Northwich.
There is a specialist near me who will have an engine; will ask what he wants for it.
