Check the official wading depth, I bet it's about 10". I'm pretty sure the D1 was around that (it was the height of the hubs).
A standard Disco 1 will manage a lot more than that... I forded water that came above the door handles in my old Disco 300 TDi.

Functional wading limit on a Disco 1 200TDi is the water drain thingy on the bottom of the air filter box.
Deeper than that the engine breathes water and you achieve hydraulic lock.
(ask me how I know.)

I had mine floating a few times. But without extending the breathers you'll get water in the axles once deeper than the offical depth.

I only just managed to avoid hydrolock that time I had water over the door handles in my 300 TDi. After a couple of failures to crank the engine did come back to life, so it must have only been a tiny bit of water - which was lucky, as the flooded ford I was crossing came over the bonnet as well..

I watched a Hilux float over a flooded river crossing, glad I wasn't in it as there was a point at which it was obvious it wasn't touching the ground with either end and was beginning to float down stream, luckily the forward momentum saw it touch the other bank at the extreme other side of the ramp and it dragged itself out. We watched a roadtrain come through a little later and it was a good 5 or 6 feet deep, obviously with the prime movers weight and 3 trailers pushing on the descent there was no chance of that floating downstream!! We slept overnight and in the morning a quick wade showed it had gone down to a more manageable 8" or so. We towed in another Hilux (a petrol this time) that had tried the food further down stream and flooded.

When my 200Tdi was floating with water over the door handles & the hole in the boot floor acting as a useful* way to allow the car to sink to the bottom I thankfully already had a snorkel fitted. The water was over the pedals before it got a wheel on the ground, thankfully with a detroit locker in the rear it only needed one wheel down to move.

I had three fat bastards in my 300 TDi with me at the time, I used them as ballast :-D
