My Mrs has an old 1.1 Saxo and I noticed when driving it the other day that it's clonking when changing gear, mostly seems to do it when raising the clutch pedal after changing up into second gear. Feels like an engine mount to me.

It'll most likely be the gearbox mount as seen on this xud engined rover.

Do the shocks and springs on 205s cause knocking? I'm only asking as you seem to have at least a bit more experience of 205 than I do.

Mine is clunking sometimes. It's far better than it was now that it has the new wheel bearings and lower arms, but there's still a clunk when coming on or off the 'power' or going over bumps. My guess is an engine mount.

That 504 looks absolutely brilliant though!

The drop links are notorious for wearing and knocking, treat them as consumables, the strut top mounts can seize on old pugs causing a clang when steering. If coming from the rear and there's a thud, thud, thud going on during breaking it'll probably be the rear beam mounts.

That's if it's not an engine or gearbox mount of course. Can you get someone to watch the engine while you raise the clutch with it in gear with the handbrake on? Forwards and reverse.

That's a good point. The drop links on the Alfa 147 I had made a horrific noise when they wore out.
Do 205s even have anti-roll bars? Also it's definitely from the front.

Maybe only on the Gti's, many rears since I've had a 205? I was generalising tbh after having a 205, ZX's, 306's and 405's, all pretty similar in design.

The rover fenlander with xud engine was making a clunk when changing gear.
