He won it. Price isn't too bad as Schaefft wanted a bag for it.

I sort of like it but I'm not exactly sure it's what I'm looking for. The market is oddly barren at the moment.

Old Man is trying to steer me onto BMWs and MX-5s, but I'm not really up for that.
Mx5/eunos auto could be a laugh actually. I quite like the look of them with a hard top fitted. Parts availability for the safrane was non existent 10 years ago so God knows what a pre facelift would be like for any bits these days.

I had a cheap XJ40, a late battery in boot one. After I rebuild the fuseboxes almost everything worked & it was a nice car. About as bad on fuel as my XJR driven normally...

Mx5s are bloody A* cars. If I had the room, I would always have one on the fleet. Superb fun to drive, really easy to repair, look great, feel great and cheap to buy & run.

Fuck having an Invacar spec one though, unless I had a disability which meant I couldn't shift gears. The MX5 manual gearbox is one of the best boxes I've ever used in a car. Sticking a shit slush box in one is an abomination.

The only reason they exist is for the US market that can't drive manuals and the Japanese city market where they are sat in traffic all the time thus want the convenience - but will never have the ability to have fun anyway. It's not even a very good auto box.

Which is why that's an Eunos, as an auto mx5 UK market car doesn't exist. There is no point. Can't rev through the gears to the red line in each, can't match the gear for a corner and hold it there, can't get the glorious down shift from third to second or bang it from third to fourth and can't even do a wheelspin.

I get you like autos, as they are convenient and nicer to drive in cities. I love them for that too. However as you already own an auto, is there need for every car you own to also be an auto? Especially when you could have a chance of a great manual gearbox in the fleet too.

This isn't that far off the mark (mental stuff). Auto makes life a lot easier for me.

I've messaged the seller...

This Mercedes SL is causing quite the stir on the beige eBay tat thread and could be something to consider. It's the perfect combination of the potential for financial ruin of an XJ and the open top motoring of an MX-5 (but in a car which works with an auto box).

The real problem of the MX5 is that cheaper BMW Z3s exist.

In 1976 someone said that old tatty Lotus Elans were more expensive than MG Midgets though. The Z3, whilst not a bad car, is not even close to an MX5 as a drivers car*. For that you need a Z1, but they're not £1000 sadly. Now that was a serious effort from the Motoren Werke.

*I fucking hate that phrase.

If you'd put a 1k Z3 and a 1k MX5 in front of me, my choice would be pretty clear.
Not least because you can get orderly Z3s for a grand, but only rubbish MX5s.
Drivers car, my arse. Neither of them is by any stretch of the imagination.
