I don't think so. Changing the front wheels makes no difference either, I've had 3-4 sets on the front, and putting two of the factory 'daisy' wheels on the front made the noise worse. Unless the alignment/balance is bad, I'm starting to suspect a wheel bearing as they haven't ever been touched.

I'm certainly not an expert in car trouble diagnostics but from my experience fucked wheel bearings would whine differently depending on steering position. Unless they are so fucked that it makes no difference whatsoever.

Since when have valve stem seals any influence on the compression?
Not trying to piss on your parade here, but if it has hydro tappets, this is a head off job if it doesn't rectify itself after an extensive several hundred miles trip.
I'm just a bit concerned that borked gearbox will grenade in hilarious fashion at the point furthest from home.

Autobox holds first for too long but doesn't slip. Clogged filter I think. The ATF is clean.

Problem with autoboxes is not that they're unreliable when they get older, it's that most UK mechanics run a mile from them and don't want to get involved. So the fluids end up never getting changed.

In America, they're used to doing it so much, that nearly every garage has the know how and tools to do changed and even power flushes.

I concur with sic. If it's very clean could be a quick splash and dash and fuck it off. Now my focus,vectra,Kia and Toyota all held first gear longer with a cold engine. Not a gearbox fault but was apparently to aid warming up the engine and cat.
