If I want to go out for a drive I much prefer Rwd for the first two reasons Hooli says, although my mk2 Golf GTi was very good. If I need to go somewhere, especially in poor conditions, I prefer Fwd.

Anyway, because I was stupid I bought it, for £10,500 with 6,000 miles on the clock and a few months shy of it's first MOT...
A fortnight later I realised I hated it. Dead steering, uncomfortable seats, shit to see out of, fond of insane snap oversteer for seemingly no reason, not actually fast - just not as slow as the Yaris/Dolly, the demist was utter garbage, it was recalled because Vauxhall had fitted the wrong springs on one end, the interior started falling to bits almost instantly, servicing was more expensive, metallic black was impossible to keep clean. It was just fucking shit.
I also managed to run over a stone within a week of purchase which not only punched through the low profile tyre but also punched clean through the alloy itself.
£120 for a matching Dunlop and £240 for a new alloy wheel, unique to that model... Oh, and naturally it had no spare wheel, just a can of goop.
Then it started getting vandalised, presumably because it was a bit flash. In the end it got keyed 3 times and every time it happened I could practically hear it devaluing on top of the terrifying depreciation.
After a year I sold it, for £6,500. My parents had to give me £3000 just to pay the finance off so I could afford to move out of their attic. The whole experience of ownership was uniquely shit, the only car I genuinely regret buying and actively dislike.

I was very impressed with a mates S1. They are a completely different animal to an MX-5 (he's owned and daily both). He was considering selling it to buy one of the very last Elises but his wife is quite keen to get a F-Type herself instead of selling the Elise. I would be very keen to buy it as it's been well looked after in the 15 years he's owned it. It'd require selling quite a few of my cars to fund and justify it though.
Problem is, a second hand Evora isn't much more which is a far better car again. Except it's not a convertible.

I'm told the S2 is a far better idea, but like 911's the old ones are 'better' even though they definitely are not.
So many of the US Elises were damaged and I’ve seen one on the M4 slip road in Cardiff come to grief as a snap grip rear end tried to take the lead.
If you are either a driving god or someone who doesn’t push your car for fun, then go for it. They will appreciate a bit like a classic mini. The S2 is little better (the teapot is replaced by something with a little more go as long as you don’t pull one of the chocolate camshaft cars). The S1 with the rover didn’t seem to have the head problems of the MGF. Some say because it had better cooling.
Great looking cars with more than a passing similarity to the Dino, but a car beyond my limits in anything other than AutoX.
Same is true about the aircooled 911. Mine is a sunny weather cruiser, so little of the above applies. Wouldn’t think of ripping it like I do the WRX or used to my Westfield.
Try an MR2 (MRS) spyder. Toyota really had it worked out on those (other than the precats). Nice compliant ride, comfortable, great soft top, fair visibility, great handling and way more progressive at the limit (maybe because it lets go at slower speeds with a bit more communication to let you know to ease off or get ready to counter steer). IMHO very underrated. Wish I hadn’t cut mine up for a DNA 360 replica. They are pretty expensive in the US but comparatively cheap in the UK from memory.
I know the Elise is the classic, but if I was buying, it would be the Toyota all the way!
