Are we talking about the Freelander 1.8?

I know a lad who thought he was being clever by plating a 1.3 Mk5 Escort for taxi purposes thinking such a simple lump would require minimal maintenance. As well as having to suffer the full DHSS spec he also killed the engine before it'd even covered 80k, the tappet noise it made during the last six months would have disgraced a 1978 Chrysler Alpine.

Were mantas any good? They fall into the seventies and eighties hinterland of cars that get largely forgotten.
As I suspected I was right about everything.

Yep.

I had a 73 Ascona, the saloon/estate as opposed to the Manta coupe version. It was a great car for the time and probably would still be fairly good now. It was light years ahead of things like Cortinas.

The F reg one I had was amazingly rotten. Getting four foot of air over a humpback bridge snapped the mounting for the axle nose, which didn't help matters. Drove just like a slightly lighter Carlton as far as I could tell.
