Yes. Only when you delete-optioned the stripes did you get a Mexico badge, otherwise they had the 1600GT one as the stripes already incorporated the Mexico name.
I don't think Ford ever sold a model badged 1600GT? They sold a 1300 Sport and before that a 1300GT which can be spotted by the hydraulic clutch.
I’m going to have to get my RS anorak out for this.
I’m inclined to agree with Mercrocker about the 1600GT badges on the wings of Mexicos. Also the Sport and GT were available concurrently, both with the 1300GT engine, the GT was specced as per the 1300XL , whereas the Sport had a deluxe interior without the 6 dial dash , just a pod revcounter. But it did have the big wing shell , some say it was the full Type 49 other theories say the Sport and 1300e only had the wings not the full AVO strengthening.
I had a 1600GT Capri\Mexico wing badge on the back of my Mk2 Cortina when I was 17 and once had a particularly keen copper make me take off the air cleaner to prove it was only a deluxe as the insurance said.
Incidentally all Type49 shells had holes for a hydraulic clutch including the cable clutched RS2000.
Only the Mexico, TC and RS1600 had a hydraulic clutch as they used the V4 Corsair 2000GT gearbox (2000E). All others were cable.
Mexicos had 1600GT wing badges (possibly from the Capri) with stripes and Mexico on the boot badge. Stripe delete cars had Mexico wing badges. Only the RS1600 and some early 2000's had the round RS boot badge.
Sports and 1300E's all had a standard Type 48 body with Mexico/RS/TC front wings. They were all built at Halewood with some metallic 1300E's being repainted and trimmed at Aveley (AVO).
Twin Cams were all built at Halewood, the last one in mid 1971, 18 months after the AVO plant was opened. Nobody has ever come up with a good explanation - they were a complete pain in the arse to build, requiring an off track build area and disrupting the Escort line - the whole reason AVO was set up up at huge expense.
AVO Escorts are deservedly expensive. They represent an era we will never see again, basically custom built go faster models from a big manufacturer. They are excellent fun as well.
The Maybach is typical over complicated toss that is unrepairable when it shits itself.
