Engine failure perhaps? I can't imagine they'd be cheap to replace.
In theory the engine should be ‘just’ a V12 SClass one , a Saturday mornings work to swap over.

It was still getting MOT’d every year when it was parked up next that RR Sport. I’m pretty sure it belonged to an Arab kid that either visited in the summer or was studying here. The house had that Arab look about it, big 4/5 bed detached but neglected and looking more like a Council flat- in my experience Arabs couldn’t care less about the outside of their houses, probably because back home the weather and dust and shit everywhere means they don’t go outside, other than to get in their cars.

Aye that's a point. Where would you source a second hand engine?

The MD of a company I used to agency drive for owned a W12 Phaeton that I had the privilege of riding in a couple of times. When I returned to cover a few shifts a few months later I was surprised to see the Posh Passat dumped outside of the office covered in moss while the MD was now piloting a Jag XF. I enquired what was up with the W12 and it turned out that some part in the engine had failed that would cost £12,000 to replace.

My first car was a Datsun 100a just like that. It was a great little car and took plenty of abuse until I stuffed it into a mk2 Cavalier and wrote it off. I did buy a second one to replace it but that didn't last long as it was totally rotten. I have often thought about getting another but after going back to a Renault 18 some years ago I think the memories will be better than reality. (when I had my first 18 in the late 80's it was the bollocks and could even leave a 3 litre Capri for dust on the twisty back roads. When I bought another about 9 years ago it was such a let down)

I don't think Ford ever sold a model badged 1600GT? They sold a 1300 Sport and before that a 1300GT which can be spotted by the hydraulic clutch.
I’m going to have to get my RS anorak out for this.
I’m inclined to agree with Mercrocker about the 1600GT badges on the wings of Mexicos. Also the Sport and GT were available concurrently, both with the 1300GT engine, the GT was specced as per the 1300XL , whereas the Sport had a deluxe interior without the 6 dial dash , just a pod revcounter. But it did have the big wing shell , some say it was the full Type 49 other theories say the Sport and 1300e only had the wings not the full AVO strengthening.
I had a 1600GT Capri\Mexico wing badge on the back of my Mk2 Cortina when I was 17 and once had a particularly keen copper make me take off the air cleaner to prove it was only a deluxe as the insurance said.
Incidentally all Type49 shells had holes for a hydraulic clutch including the cable clutched RS2000.
Only the Mexico, TC and RS1600 had a hydraulic clutch as they used the V4 Corsair 2000GT gearbox (2000E). All others were cable.

Mexicos had 1600GT wing badges (possibly from the Capri) with stripes and Mexico on the boot badge. Stripe delete cars had Mexico wing badges. Only the RS1600 and some early 2000's had the round RS boot badge.
Sports and 1300E's all had a standard Type 48 body with Mexico/RS/TC front wings. They were all built at Halewood with some metallic 1300E's being repainted and trimmed at Aveley (AVO).

Twin Cams were all built at Halewood, the last one in mid 1971, 18 months after the AVO plant was opened. Nobody has ever come up with a good explanation - they were a complete pain in the arse to build, requiring an off track build area and disrupting the Escort line - the whole reason AVO was set up up at huge expense.

AVO Escorts are deservedly expensive. They represent an era we will never see again, basically custom built go faster models from a big manufacturer. They are excellent fun as well.

And as an aside, if you ordered a Mk2 Escort with automatic transmission it may have had the wide transmission tunnel but it most certainly WASN'T a GCAT RS shell.

The auto tunnel was different to the RS one - they were huge, wide and flat. At AVO, the standard Escort tunnels were modified with a hide mallet at the front to clear the bigger bellhousing. It's very difficult to do a clutch change on an AVO car with the engine fitted and it's easier to pull the engine and gearbox out.

The gearlever hole was relocated for the 2000E box by cutting a square top section around the existing hole, 1 inch in front and 4 inches behind, turning it 180 degrees and gas welding it back in before seam sealing. That's how you can tell an original. Mark II RS's all had a unique floorpan as they were built at Saarlouis. OK but not the same.

I've had a few - three RS1600's and one TC. All were bought as projects and flipped as I can't afford the £££ for a proper resto. You need 40 grand to do it right.
