4x4 pick up things what are they like

I've got a 2013 isuzu rodeo that I use to tow my fifth wheel caravan. It had the rear suspension uprated from the factory for towing purposes, so without the van on the back, it bounces about like Pamela Anderson's tits on baywatch.
It has a good driving position, and eventually gets up to 80 on the motorway.
Biggest drawback is 28mpg on a good day, less than 20mpg with the van on the back.

I did notice when i went out with my sister in her one ( might be a Navara or L200) that the average mpg was about 19 which I thought was pretty poor for something modern.
