I can only imagine the young lad is lucky enough to have a rather comfy cash pile and frittering four figure sums on an expensive hobby is accessible.

As a late forties person who started life as a cycle mechanic at Halfords in 1988, and whose wages were such that saving for a months worth of rent was a struggle, I cannot possibly imagine what it feels like to be able to spunk four figures on a car, knowing I had other cars as well.

I started on 7,500 a year if I remember rightly, and without getting all Cheggers on you (no offense!) I could probably turn that in a week nowadays (only in US or if the project involves uncleared landmines) and STILL struggle to justify spending that kind if money on a hobby.

Probably just envious! But still, stay away from Jags or anything bargelike where the repair bills could easily equal the purchase price.

Bond bug for zany moments and a droptop TR7 for picking up the clart.

When I lived with my parents I only had to pay £200 a month digs. That was how I managed to amass all my Dolomites. Still couldn't afford to actually keep them running, mind...

Although when I was 20 my parents did say "look, you have a income and still live in our attic. That's a bit silly. It's time for you to go live in the real world now".

And that was the last time I ever had any money.

That attic must have been fucking awesome to be 200 a week!!!

You could rent a 3 bed house fully furnished for that here in Norfolk!

It’s more than I charge my tenants for in my cottage.

My take home pay was a LOT less than that, and maybe a little less even in today’s standards.

That’s 10k a year!

Phew!! I was imagining your folks to be Deborah Meaden types hooning around sink estates in 53 plate X5s collecting rent off illegal immigrants 24 to a bunk and charging grandparents by the hour to use the greenhouse... property tycoon winners!!

200 a month sounds a bit less cruel!

Is it only me who finds parents charging their children rent being cruel?

Well i paid board at home when I was 16 and working and at my grans too when I was working. I think it's only fair. Why should you be subsidising a child living under your roof when they have income? It also gave me an insight into living alone and how to budget.

That’s the main detail. It is good preparation for financial responsibility. It should be unlikely that mother will smash your kneecaps if you come up a fiver short.

Also, bear in mind we seem to be aspiring to the developing world model of parents relying on offspring income to pay gas and leccy bills AND still have enough for 1kg of snout and Nisa branded methyl alcohol for necking on weekday evenings.
