Re: Spanish hearse thread now with six appeal

I was bored this morning so took the deck out to see what I can do along the lines of a camper conversion. At the moment I am thinking keep the standard deck from the rear door to where the rear seat was in the original then make a fold down area to allow access from the front seats. I am sure I can mount a cooker type pod to one side where the rear doors were. It will need a bit of reinforcement before I start cutting the bulkhead out though. If anyone has any ideas of how to do it or where to find materials etc all advice is most welcome.

If you can cope with it VW camper forums often have ideas about materials and equipment, for example:

I have some left over 12mm ply and light maple 3mm Vohringer ply left over from my cupboard
building build.
Where is best place to buy push button cabinet catches?

I built my own but overspecified the wood, it weighs a ton, and the main places I bought fittings from no longer exist; it's over 10 years ago now.

I had a trip out to a camper specialist the other day and picked up some very good advice and a selection of bits to do the job. First problem was that gas hobs need a minimum of 450mm above them so mounting one in the car wasn't going to happen. The plan now is to mount the fridge in the rear foot well area and have a fold down deck to create a bed. I will have a pull out table from the rear to mount a non fixed hob on. This saves having to get the instalation gas checked. I have started welding a new frame in to mount the boards for the floor and to panel the sides. Hopefully the welding will be finished tomorrow then it is woodwork time trying to make it all work. I have a split charge system to fit along with the 240v set up.

Are electric hob any good? Presumably it will be just for a brew so perhaps room for a camping hob is sufficient?

Funny, that's the same flitch panel stamping as in the back of my Plymouth. They must have really liked the way it collects water and rusts.

Looking good though, that's got a decent bit of space in.

You'd need to be plugged into 240v to use it. Gas you'll be able to use off grid.

The electric hob is an idea. I might pop to B&Q later to see how deep they are as I could have a fixed electric and a portable gas. My biggest problem at the moment is I keep changing my mind about how to arrange the layout.

Probably much cheaper elsewhere just first I came to. Inverter useful for other appliances that may be hooked in too, like chargers.

Inverter hooked into a leisure battery that is switched and charged off the main car system. The car probably already has a juicy alternator given the size of engine?

I've got an inverter linked to the leisure battery which is charged by a fair size alternator.

I'm not certain that the power would last very long given the inverters inefficiencies and the draw of the electric hob.

Inverters are pretty damn efficient as they're only DCDC boost converters with a sine wave drive function. Going to be in the order of 80% to 90% at least.

(1000w + 20%) / 12v = 100A. Conveniently you get 100Ah leisure batteries, so that would easily do 15mins to 30mins without damaging the pack. More than enough for a couple minute boil of a kettle and maybe 10 mins for frying some bacon.

But given a profit needs to be made, you could get say something like this:

And stick it in the back on a shelf that rolls out from underneath on draw rollers. Make it long enough to clear the back lid and also have room for a preparing area.
