Funny timing with this thread, as I drove across Germany yesterday and had my first autobahn experience. It's brilliant, and really works over there, but think it's mainly to do with the condition of the roads being much better, and most importantly, people driving very attentively.

There was absolutely nobody sat in the outside lane who shouldn't have been, people pulled in when something quicker was coming on the outside lane and lorries knew better than to try and overtake each other when it wasn't appropriate (aside from one person, which wasn't bad going for a several hundred mile trip.)

In the busier sections around Essen and Dortmund it was normal to sit around 80mph, but the quieter sections in the east were nigh on deserted and I could sit around 100/120mph comfortably for mile after mile, even in a base spec Focus estate packed with suitcases.

In the UK, it would be absolute chaos, with morons in lorries and crossovers pulling out or sitting in the outside lanes. It seems to work perfectly over here as everyone understands and respects the rules, which just can't be said for the UK.

Same in Spain. Had a puncture in my Doblo which wrecked the tyre. Unsurprisingly, I could not find a matching tyre, so had to buy two.

At the ITV (MOT) tyres are checked that they match the vehicle makers spec, in that they are the right size and speed rating, and match on the axel, otherwise its a fail

I'm assuming that you work on a fixed price for airport work as I do/did. This price is based on time and fuel costs to cover the job. The latter is based on the MPG that whatever car you're driving achieves at a 70mph cruise. What would your thoughts be of a punter that you're running to the airport at 5am demanding that you cruise at 100-110mph? I can imagine that this would halve your MPG.

I’ve never really applied that much science to pricing - pre-Covid my bread and butter was Heathrow. If I was subbing I’d get £70 ( plus parking on pickups) My own jobs were £80.
Since covid its £95 across the board, to include new drop off charge at LHR. It very rare they don’t just pay £100.
Cruising at 100 the XF shows 45mpg and my old E220 50. I could try going slower , I suppose but I’m afraid it’s just not in my nature. Some mornings I’ll get back home at before 5 after a 3.30 takedown and think “ Fuck it, why didn’t I come back at 50 and save a couple of quid” All I’m doing is going back to bed or switching the telly on.
Anyway it’s becoming irrelevant since I got a proper job again, although I’m still doing the odd one. But then I would if I was in your position and just use the Astra or Range Rover. Not that I’m dodgy or ‘owt. My long term customer/ friends have been in some odd stuff- Disco, Mx5, Fiat 500 etc

I fellow pub goer I knew used to just do airport runs. When a punter called, he used to ask for the flight number and departure time. Then subtract 2 hours check-in (precovid), add time on in case of delays (varied depending on which airport) , then his standard time to the airport from previous knowledge. He would then tell them what was the latest pickup time, and if they were not happy with that, then he wouldn't take them. Never drove over the speed limit. Also, he never advertised, all word of mouth.

My ex's mate recently went from Herefordshire to Birmingham Airport. 5am flight, 3pm pickup, and was charged £240 return. 100 mile round trip.

I've had an indicated 130 from a 2.0 8v cav mk3.
80 in a 750 panda and that was sketchy shit. Indicated 105 in a ford escort van.
The octavia 1.4 tsi I had was so easy to speed in. Could sit at 120 without breaking a sweat. The focus I have now seems happier sitting at 80 than what it does at 70 but thi ignis tends to get a bit loud over 65. Box is quite close ratio too. If no li.its I'd still probably sit between 80 and 90 in the focus anyway.

No it was a private stretch of land that looked vaguely like the a52 from Notts to Derby. The crash investigators found the bmw was doing 147 when his airbags went off and the van gearbox had shattered so I think he pushed me to more than 105!
