Just ordered this for those headlights I bought. It'll be much easier to do with the headlights off the car.

Exspensive but the reviews are good.

You're spending a lot of money on something you're going to have to scrap before next week.

Been out for a blast in the TT today, it's as tight as a drum and goes like a stabbed rat. But the handling is a little skittish. For what he has in it what bargain.

You can pull out the map data from the ECUs. It's how engine mappers work as they won't create a whole map from scratch. They pull the vehicles existing one and fiddle with that.

I know for years the official VAG dealer scantool will reset any custom codings (e.g. activated cruise/etc) to factory defaults when plugged in. So certainly very likely they do it to see if remapped. Probably as soon as they plug it in, it'll be checked and blacklisted. Remember that youtuber that did it on his financed BMW and BMW finance fucked him over for mucking about with a vehicle he didn't actually own.

Many ways they can do it. Some methods quicker than others but more prone to spoofing by fucked around software on the ECU. Even at a very basic level, any one can read the boost pressure under load and figure if it's within stock values.

Given the prevalence of remapping vehicles, I'm sure the manufacturers have come up with robust ways of detecting it. They will know exactly what are official released software images, standard procedure to record such information for accountability reasons - especially in the heavily legislative world of the automotive industry.

About a decade ago where I used to live, my neighbour was a car accident defence lawyer. He said the insurance companies and police would check vehicles that were involved in serious accidents to see if they've been mapped. Back then certain vehicles were especially targeted such as Scoobies, Skylines and such. Now he said the likely hood of being investigated like this is slim and only really likely if someone has been killed or seriously injured, but it certainly can and does happen.

I imagine in this chaps case, someone is telling porkies and it's unlikely to be Audi. Not implausible but given every single part on a factory production line is tracked (software is classed as a part too), it would be highly surprising if they were wrong. Not least if it was the wrong software version on their records, they'd know it still was official software. Probably something silly like the last owners son did it Image
My old neighbour is a police accident investigator for the west midlands police. Heard some tasty stories down the pub.
This was back around 2005. They used to check for piggy back chips on the ECU, but never delved into the ECU themselves.

Had a look at the tyres today. The inside edge of both front tyres have worn down. The tracking must be fucking miles out considering they were new recently. No wonder it's slightly skittish!

Warrens fucked if they interrogate his old Prius..

Yes. They all do that now and mnfrs can detect a remap remotely no matter how clever the map wanker thinks he is. My local Sytners has loads in, 320i’s remapped to be a 328i but with a compression ratio too high……BOOOM! Any remapped car automatically has a voided warranty.

New to me michelins (8mm) on the van today. Local Polish lads have put their prices up or maybe it's because I didn't take the wheels to them instead of the whole vehicle. Up a fiver to £15 a wheel. Still only £129 for a pair of branded tyres fully fitted. I can live with that.

I only ever seem to buy part worns these days. I bought a pair of nearly new 225/50x16 Goodyears last week for £50, still with some of the moulding spikes on the outer edges. That’s about 1/3 the new price.

I imagine they'd just send them off to someone now. Whether manufacturer or some company that specialises in it.
A quick Google shows this company as an example:
