Lovely.
Cut a slot in the end so you can wind it in and out with a screwdriver, or machine flats on for spannerage.
I've used my BMW ones, made* by me, for 20 years.

What about putting a left handed thread the other end? Or a flat section that you can put a spanner on. Then you can put a nut on the end when you want to remove it.

Well, it seems the MG charge fault is intermittent, as the warning light went out twice on the way home from work. But it's still on more than it is off. Although the battery has shown no sign of running down I trickle charged it today.

It isn't the alternator bulb in the back of the gauge shorting out is it? That got me for a bit on my MGB.
The bulb holder when pushed in was pushing against this metal tab
Pulling out slightly got it to work properly
I fixed it permanently by putting an o-ring on the holder

I will check the bulb holder and see. A simple fix if so.
Gearbox mounts were past it. Speedy Spares furnished me with a new pair.
I got the Carplan engine cleaner out and cleaned up the gearbox and bellhousing. It's good stuff, being water soluble you brush on, agitate the grime with the brush, leave for a few minutes and hose off. I applied copper grease (anti-seize compound) to the gearbox and friction plate splines. Plus a dab of Castrolease grease for good measure.
Then I fitted the new clutch friction plate and pressure plate. I used my Sykes Pickavant clutch alignment tool for the first time since I bought it several years ago. Then tightened down all pressure plate bolts evenly so as not to distort the plate. I fitted the clutch slave cylinder, which appears to be weeping a little, so will have to keep an eye on the fluid level. Re-fitted the starter motor. With the clutch slave cylinder back in place, I thought I'd just test the pedal to feel how the new kit is... would it be a heavier or a lighter pedal? Pressing it with my hand, it felt lighter, and then, of course, the carefully aligned friction plate fell out of place when the clutch pedal was pressed. D'oh! Fortunately, setting it up again was a simple matter through the access plate inside the car whilst simultaneously pressing the clutch pedal.
So the next job is to get that heavy old mother of a gearbox back in, then tell you what you've all been waiting for.

Well its definitely a faulty alternator. I took the bulb holder out and the bulb was lit. Also the battery didn't have enough power to start the car, so I had to abandon it. Amazing what 15 miles with the headlights on will do to a battery.

I can't understand why your Midget hasn't attracted any bids at all on eBay. My only guesses would be end of season, market uncertainty, alternator and an honest advert that is scaring people off.
If I wasn't trying to buy a house and needing another car like a hole in the head, I'd definitely have dropped a bid on it.
