Eddie Honda's wheels of steel (and occasionally alloy)

Talk about your cars etc here. Keep it sort of sensible and on topic please.

And then they sit on their hole for days after being paid.

It seems to show up on their tracking though now and looks to have been released from customs jail, so I might see it tomorrow.

HONDA JIZZ UPDATE

Another Mister Auto order - front wheel bearings. After last week's express delivery, it was time to try freebie slow boat delivery. Ordered a pair of the above Monday 9am and took the free delivery option. Sent via DPD Tuesday evening and arrived 8.30am this morning. 4 days is good going for them as they can take ages sometimes.

SKF need to do something about their labelling though. I really don't think they can say the COO is Japan with a straight face, when INDIA is marked large on the bearing...

If it stops raining, I might make a start on the nearside.

TOOLAGE LATEST

I need to check the balance of the throttle bodies on the RT, but don't have any vacuum gauges handy. Last time I was fiddling with carb balancing I was using a mate's CarbTune and spent more time tapping the tubes with stuck rods in them. Being a posh cunt, I thought I get some new-fangled tosh and go electronic. After much searching I decided to take the plunge on this from SynchroKing 4 MK2 from Australia.

Astute readers will know that I've only a pair of TBs to balance on the RTs, but if I bought the two port one sod's law would mean I'd buy a triple or four next week. So I bought a four port one which now means in the not-to-distant future I'll probably end up with a bloody six pot to balance.

A proper test will be forthcoming, but I was testing it in the shed this morning and personally managed to register a suck of over 4" Hg (don't know if that's any good or not)

You know you can claim back the GST charged in Australia on goods being exported?

HONDA JIZZ - FRONT WHEEL BEARING PT1

Well the job got off to a reasonable start with the wheel coming off okay. The brake caliper, pads and carrier were no bother, as were even the disc screws with PH3 Vessel Megadora 980 Impacta screwdriver employed.

Then things went downhill. The Makita DTW281 ugga dugga wasn't doing anything to the hub nut, and my ¾" 1m breaker bar was elsewhere. I did try my lesser ½" 600mm bar, but even with fat man on it, it was refusing to budge. I didn't do any jumping on the bar mind and thought I'd try out an acquisition from ages ago.

Enter the Facom Dynapact! This thing if you've never seen one is a big bastard manual impact wrench. This particular one is ¾" drive, but they also do/did a 1" drive version. The patent (FR1371340A) for them was issued in 1964.

No batteries required, it requires a bit of effort but nothing too strenuous. It's easiest to position it on the nut such as the tommy bar (which is ½" drive) is about 10 and 4 and pushing down anticlockwise winds it up. The initial 30° is easy enough, and the next 30° increasingly harder until it goes with a bang on the output side. Then you move the bar clockwise again and repeat a see-saw motion and it continues its battering. Getting nowhere at first, the nut started moving and that was another problem out of the way.

Regrettably, my BFO hammer technique of separating ball joints had deserted me today and I had absolutely no luck in splitting the bottom ball joint. All I achieved was slipping with a pry bar and nicking the dust boot. The ABS sensor was also being a git and I didn't want to break it. Defeated, I put everything back together in a huff and will reattempt the job again at a later date.

I've got a feeling the drone might be the outer CV rather than the wheel bearing. I can see and feel a little bit of play rotationally in the outer joint relative to the shaft. Although I didn't notice any clicking on full left or right lock either forwards or backwards when I was leaving work the other night. The gaiter is perfect too.

Anyone know what this is?

Looks like a bit of spring steel that functions as a clip?

Hooli is right for a change that is one of the silly clips the Japs use on their castle type nuts. You can bin it and use a split pin. I had to do a wheel bearing on the front of an Aygo on Friday and what a cunt that was. My good old CP air powered ugga dugga shifts just about anything and the hammer job never fails to crack ball joints. Where the trouble began was the circlip for the bearing. They just use slots in the end to get the circlip pliers in and 15 years of use had not helped matters. I had to dremmel the fucking thing to get it out, eventually using 4 of those tiny cutting discs they have to get the last 2 bits out. It turned a book hour and a half job into over 3. I hate modern cars and their silly clips.

I shoved it back in as it works and isn't broken. I was just wondering if they have any sort of name, like Godzilla R Clip or Ultraman Clip.

Never seen one before, but I haven't spent much time under Japanese cars, well because Japanese.

Anyway, it's an EARTHWORM, PHACT!
