Nope, all built from scratch.

That's what happens when you order the things you need ahead of time, know exactly what you need in order to build the structure, and finally, don't oversubscribe the labor.

How's the insurance costs getting on in your state? Talking to my friends who still own properties in Florida. Most are finding it hard to get even basic insurance.

How's the insurance costs getting on in your state? Talking to my friends who still own properties in Florida. Most are finding it hard to get even basic insurance.

Bloody expensive, in short. We got dropped by our insurance company and had to find another, which naturally drove the cost up substantially. Add then flood insurance, car insurance on top and you begin to raise an eyebrow at the cost of living here.

Looks are deceptive. It's hurricane strapped to above Miami Dade code (which is the most stringent for high winds and flying debris in the country).
Bricks are expensive here, wood has the advantage of having a bit of give to it whereas a brick wall will crack and tend to be pulled down by any adjoining structure such as a window or roof truss.

That place has been built to be strong in compression and extension; big bad wolf might pop a window glass out or take the roof shingles but the building should remain intact.

The bottom plates are screwed down into rebar that's cast into the foundation; the studs are attached with metal straps, as are the top plates. The bays have blocking. Hell, even the cripples are doubled up to make the door and window apertures stronger.


In the UK you're lucky if they even do the roof trusses with strengthening plates.

All prefabbed trusses here (that I've seen anyway) come with those plates on, along with the standard warning about not modifying them in any way shape or form or bad things will happen.
Building control are keen on having lots of joining plates on the cut and pitch stuff we've been doing for the last few years as well.
Doubles each side of an opening is pretty much standard, the quote normally is for every one you take out put 1 back each side, but that can rapidly get a bit daft.

Cut and pitched roof on my victorian house.

It's lasted longer that most building in the southern US.

Probably wouldn't have lasted as long if we had their storms.

Also yours has lasted but an awful lot of Victorian Houses didn't. Those that lasted are the ones that effort were put into building them.
