My vote goes for the Triumph 2000/2500S. Just look out for rot and get one with overdrive.

I’ve been studying those lately, most seem to be in EddieHondaland, for some reason. I’m so old I can still remember the noise the Met’s 2500 Area cars used to make when they went flat out down a busy street. Some of em even had a bell!

I still see a tatty one locally on a K plate. I remember them being huge but it's a small car now.

I used to consider them large too, particularly the estate cars. Some posh(ish) bird round our way had a Mallard Green one, the back seat was always down for an enormous bear-sized Golden Retriever to lounge in. My hormonal conditions in the late Seventies gave mind to several different scenarios involving Posh Bird and the Triumph's load area - definitely minus the dog.

Yes, indeed they like to rust but then everything interesting did but they are super-duper vehicles to waft around in and surprisingly rapid when pressed.

My problem with XJ6es is I can only afford the ones I don’t really want ! Or the ones I can afford are too rotten. My budget would buy a very nice XJ40 but what I really want is an S2, obviously when the World was full of immaculate dodgy 70’s coloured S2s for £500 I didn’t want one.
There was a period in my career when I drove an XJ6 every day from 1985 till about 1990, 3.4 and 4.2 S3’s, 2.9,3.6 and 4.0 XJ40s and all of them broke down on me at some point. That’s when they were new, fuck knows how bad they’d be now. I wouldn’t mind a late , basic 3.4 with Tweed seats and no spec at all, apart from when C395 RPL put a rod through the block in the outside lane of the M1 at 90, they seemed less prone to stupid breakdowns than posher ones.
