Re: Land Rover Rustorashun
Onto Sandy now which occupied a couple of days last week.
6 ball joints on the steering 4 are fucked. all four came off in my hands with just a little effort Bottom of the passenger door has seen better days but the fix may well be left for the next owner Drivers door lock plate has split. I will dob a little weld in here just to prevent it flexing Dash lower section being stripped down for repairs bulkhead fitted to the car and doors rehung so I can check alignment. I haven't yet fixed the top rail around the vent panels. Inner and outer panels are terminal on this example. top hinge screw is too long and clashes against the inner frame. Need to shorten each of the top bolts by 4mm ffs to get the bulkhead aligned better than it was when I first got it, I had to pull the chassis bracket forwards worked a treat. Then I cut off the dead inner section more to come

next
lined everything up and pop riveted into place cleaned up the screen hinge supports and bonnet mounts which I had to salvage from the old bulkhead checking screen fit before welding everything in place minor calamity with the trusty dirt cheap welding cart. soon fixed with a hammer screen mounts welded in, rechecked again and then tacked the outer top sections into place. refitted bonnet to align the bonnet hinges before welding them. then removed the bulkhead again to tidy welds and finish all the little odds and sods more to come

Looks like this little business is going well, with the quality of the work it should do too.

Re: Land Rover Rustorashun
I've had a few hub seals go over the years, makes a horrible mess don't it? Some seals have the lip too deep towards the hub; The old leather type arn't always much good either, they wear out the 'land' quicker, but at least you can replace it. I've also had the double lipped ones leak.
I changed a rear one on my series today as the hub looked a bit oily at the back edge and sure enough it was one of the wrong 'uns. Lower seal is the old one with deeper lip.

My balls have seen better days but I'm not changing them. I've replaced lots over the years until I rebuilt a power harrow and had to buy a bucket of that grease.DodgeRover wrote: ↑Fri Feb 07, 2020 8:51 pm They'll be ok with that liquid grease, put some leather gaiters over the top and don't worry
One benefit of the job though is the opportunity to lose the ''railco' bush and replace with another taper roller. With radial tyres I've not found you need the built in drag of the bush, the relay does a good enough job of making the steering heavier.

Re: Land Rover Rustorashun
New Landrover track rod came with grease nipples on; they won't even fit because the nipples would catch the chassis. In any case, there's plenty of grease left after half a century even though water had been getting in one of them. I considered removing the greaser and blocking up the hole, but decided against it as the pair from m the steering arm are the hardest to change and I'm thinking that these are all nipple but no decent rubber.
The holey nature of series ones makes work on the steering easy.

Re: Land Rover Rustorashun
Just got my wheels powder coated and put 4 new Longdongs on the now lovely rims. I tried every trick to get them on the bead, bicycle inner tube in the well etc, but after ages pissing about took them into a depot this morning.
One bead cheat tank still didn't do the trick and eventually they went off to borrow another from a different firm.
It still took several attempts per tyre as each bloke has to let off at exactly the same time, and I'm fairly sure they don't want me to bring more shitty jobs to finish off...- richardthestag
