Fake alloy wheels

Post by christine »

I lost a wheeltrim from my T4 on Sunday .. i've not lost one from it before in 25 years . Irritating !

Which got me thinking . ,mid 70's hub caps were metal , a look alike alloy was a Rostyle , or similar , Who was the first company to fit full size plastic wheel trims that looked like an alloy Ford mk1fiesta S ? Vauxhall Astra ?

I remember the '86 Vauxhall Carlton with some very fancy wheel trims that ended up having to be altered as so many were falling off. We had so many angry customers complaining Vauxhall eventually did them under warranty. I used to order twenty odd on every stock order for a few years we sold so many and we were only a small town dealership.

I don’t think any a MK1 Fiestas had plastic trims or early Astras. Higher spec MK1 Astras and early Mk2 Cavaliers did get plastic wheel centres with holes for the nuts.
The Sierra was the first thing I remember with full plastic wheel covers, but SD1s had either stainless or two different types of plastic trims all of the same style from 76. Are we counting the P6B S fake RoStyles or even earlier Triumph Pi,Vitesse, GT6 effort.
Some early Scimitars had plastic trims that looked like alloys too.

The trims on Denovo rims were usually plastic and certainly fooled me into thinking they were real “ Mag” wheels when I was 10.

IIRC SAAB used to do a trim version of their fancy 99 Turbo alloys.

These probably look more like alloys now than they did back then......

I cannot find a decent picture of these one but I like them. They are better with the centres in anthracite but they look the part.

I know these are more rostyles than fake alloys but the recovering airhead in me loves these too. These respond well to the dark centre/silver rim treatment.
