Re: Land Rover Rustorashun
Sorry chaps been near 3 weeks since I updated you all
Lockdown shit is well just shit but here goes anyway
Just after the last update above I got into further bobbing the bobtail by cutting off the custom chassis extension off Then the new fuel tank arrived to replace the incontinent item fitted to the 109 van The chap who is buying the Red Range Rover project was questioning Sicursiv glass in the rear sides, I learned something new. While triplex is #1 supplier because of the constant threat of industrial action during the 60s and 70s BL had back up supplies shipped in from Italy's #1 supplier. Pretty standard summer weather in North Devon. If it isn't raining, it will be soon! Dad had a couple of big Ash trees felled because of Ash Dieback, this little lot should be seasoned in time for winter. Series IIa has to earn a living Next up is to weld the rear sill mounts back onto the original chassis. Bit of Pythagoras and some chassis check diagrams got me on the right track Happy enough with that, obviously still need to grind the welds back. Relocated the 109 van into the barn, somewhat irritatingly the front timing cover crank seal is drip drip dripping Jobs to do, fit new floor supports and then the new fuel tank Nice galv jobbies. Bought them from paddockspares. Wooden floor is not standard Part 2/4 to follow shortly

Re: Land Rover Rustorashun
part 2/4
Alas the floor support at the back end needs the floor to be removed first. Fucksticks Drilling out shit loads of LR original heavy duty rivet bastards. Then I found a line of spot welds down the drivers side? ! ? wtf Floor eventually out and the chassis is looking a bit of a shambles from the top. It has had a new rear crossmember fitted in the past, some rot has kicked in where it joined the chassis. Then there are shit loads or little patches that can be pulled off My tappy found more rot, the rot under the damper mount was from a patch that I chipped off with a wood chisel A fucking huge patch was peeled back from over the chassis by the nearside rear spring mount. Held on with 1mm steel and pigeon snot Wary of thin steel badly welded repairs I cut through the repair on the main nearside chassis rail just behind the seat box. The original rail had been wrapped right around with 1mm steel. The rail is 2" deep with sand and rusted remains of the original chassis. It is proper fucked! This is the section of steel that I removed from that bodge, 3 layers thick, 2 rotted out completely. Opened up the rail around the nearside rear spring hanger. It is welded to the 1mm steel and at this point I can lever it back and forth. you can see that the repair has not been welded to the chassis!!! Part 3/4 coming up soon

Re: Land Rover Rustorashun
Part 3/4
Oh yay!
Pythagoras frame was rotated so I could align the drivers side rear sill mounting All done, then I got into scraping mud, sand and old underseal from the chassis rails in readiness for cleaning and painting Unlike the 1980 Land Rover chassis, this one is really clean and solid. and some twat chopped the arse end off it Quite a lot of shiny steel and original paint Even in this location around the main cross member that is just forward of the rear axle, there is no serious rust pitting. might sound like shitwork but it is quite satisfying. working with a paper scraper and a chisel and the shit just falls off leaving shiny steel and light rust. The swallow chicks hatched a couple of weeks back but are now to big for the nest, so most of the day they line up along the beam watching me shouting at things on the workbench I have a scrap chassis that will provide the back end for this one which I am collecting on Thursday. So now I need to crack on with getting axles off and stripped down, chassis and axles should be back together and painted in 2 weeks! Under the original chassis paint, and upside down are LR markings I guess from the chassis supplier. nice bit of archaeology My birthday on Thursday, #3 son bought me a mug, he also got me a bottle of gin for fathers day so I have been drinking gin from the mug Final part 4/4 coming up

Re: Land Rover Rustorashun
This is it for now. rest thy sphincters though as there is much more to come
Comedy high lift rear dampers might look shit but they have barely been used, going to lob them on ebay for beer funds Just to demonstrate how clean the mechanical are on this Range Rover, these are the brake pipe clips on the rear axle. the rust is surface and can be rubbed off with a finger. 2/3 of these screws undid! Never ever ever had that Rear axle strip down in progress, the diff will stay in place until all the surface is clean and prepped and then I will pull it and set tolerance. The nearside / long driveshaft was a bastard to remove, the splines at the diff end are showing signs that it was very very abused rear hubs look ok, discs covered in axle oil and rust These are the bits I aim to keep, degrease, wash, assess, assemble and then paint With the axle stripped to this, I can see no welding. Diff pan will need to be checked. Easy to lift onto the bench etc Removed the front axle, chassis is heavy but can be shifted around. need to finish welding, cleaning and then paint the bastard. rust.co.uk epoxy 1-2-1 Getting ready to strip the front axle down!! Spoilers are it had brand new swivel balls, wheel bearings and discs (although they were rusty There is regular updates on my yootoob channel, but I will continue with the photo updates for your enjoyment
Stay sane folks

Re: Land Rover Rustorashun
you don't know the half of it! Land Rovers can hide their rust very well. I am surprised that this hadn't broken it's back!

Re: Land Rover Rustorashun
Oddly my RRC also had an excellent chassis when I last looked, far better than a series of the same vintage and it has had a far from easy life.
I bet the original rangie that was Bob tailed was a lovely well maintained thing
