Yeah, those are standard wear on 50s Yanks here - either ones that need upholstering or protection from the sun/jeans rivets. I'll stick (sometimes literally) to the Quartermaster's one for the time being!

How accurate do you want the ammeter to be?
1. Do you want an ammeter FSD capable of the alternators output ,
or
2. Do you want a bypass Cct that takes over at the ammeters indicated max to accommodate the alternators max output?
Number one or number two. Not burning the ammeter up with an over-current situation is the primary worry. Pegging the maximum limit of the ammeter below the max of the alternator is not really an issue- if it goes to the stop then it is charging like mad and that is fairly straightforward to see.
Losing the small scale deflection at low discharge current is a concern, but I do have Idiot Light now which is an attention-grabber.
Given that, probably #2
I havn't been able to think of a suitable cct for 2. that is not stupidly complicated.
So I'm going to suggest 3.
3. Rework your ammeter to be a voltmeter (gut a voltmeter make a scale and put the ammeter mech away somewhere safe)

I was actually looking at option 3. It's do-able. Ammeter sits on a window marked BATTERY so a volts meter works there too.
Could take a milliammeter movement from a modern high current ammeter and hook it to the needle on this, run the coil wires to the terminals and then have the shunt sit between the terminals.
That would also work, the sweep on this is about 80 degrees end to end, 90-100 pegged.

It's a year old so someone already ate the main chunk of depreciation. So naturally I did the Man Maths in my head and bought the one with the biggest engine that they had on the forecourt.
The little angel of regret on one shoulder is currently in ICU and the devil on the other is trying to look innocent whilst cleaning his pitchfork.
Plus it's in a real color. I missed my orange car. So now I have fixed all the "I miss...." items, the wife is happy (!) and I own the absolute antithesis of the Pontiac. It's all about balance. Yin, yang and all that.

So, cheap stuff right now on the Chieftain. Work won't stop totally but the money I was gonna spend, well. That went elsewhere.
