I've never seen any braking system so over-engineered.
Whats the sump capacity of the Bentley? And what oil did you put in? Sorry to ask, I'm just really interested in running one.

Re: How to buy a car in the lockdown. Bentley Turbo R
The Shadow system is probably the better system as there are 2 separate systems one for each caliper on each front wheel where as the Bentley only has one hose per wheel so if you burst a pipe on the Shadow you will still have half the system working to stop the car. The Bentley will just pump the fluid out at 200psi until it runs out. For oil it is on 10/40 semi synthetic and holds about 9 litres. Synthetic oils were only just coming out when it was new so you could go for fancy shell oil as per the manual but the 10/40 is fine. For the rest of the service parts it isn't too bad. The K&N filter was 20 quid but a standard air filter is about 10 quid, oil filter was around 6 quid and the fuel around 15. The most expensive thing was the plugs as they have upgraded the spec to platinum ones and 8 were around 50 quid. Service costs don't need to be expensive but it does surprise me how long these jobs take. To do the discs and the full service probably took me over 6 hours actual work on it. The braking system is the part most garages are afraid of thinking it is over complicated when it is quite straight forward really. I should change the fluid on the Bentley really as bleeding the front brakes after the new discs has made a big difference to the feel. Hopefully the pads for the shadow will arrive on Tuesday so I can get it finished and bleed the system. They are easier than normal cars to bleed as you just run the engine put a bar to hold the pedal down and just open the bleed nipples until the fluid runs clear. Next things to look into will be the dash lights as they seem a bit crap, at the moment. I haven't taken it out in the dark but suspect there are some bulbs gone. The cruise control doesn't work either but that might be a bit tricky to sort.AutoshiteBoy wrote: ↑Sat Aug 29, 2020 5:59 pm I've never seen any braking system so over-engineered.

I like the safe-like lock on the glove compartment. So you can leave your diamonds there in safety when you pop out to the shop.

I didn't realise RR had decontented the braking set-up? Or that a Shadow has the same size discs as a Turbo R?

The Bentley has ABS which sort of explains the different set up and my Turbo R has the standard brakes, later Turbo's got a big brake upgrade. Most Shadows are on solid discs but this is a late Shadow 2 so uses a lot of stuff that went on to be used on the Spirit. The brake hoses are different and the seals in the calipers as the Shadows use RR363 brake fluid and the Spirits etc are all on LHM mineral oil. Early Shadows had 3 separate brake systems 2 power brake circuits and one manual circuit that was linked to a straight forward master cylinder. They also had height control on the front as well as the rear but most cars had this removed as a recall. One job I wouldn't want is replacing the brake pipes on an early car as there is probably close to 100 ft of pipe on all the systems.

The glovebox is pretty secure and you get a valet key with the car which can open the car and start it but not open the glovebox. On the Bentley there is a cut out switch to keep the boot locked as well. If you set it the boot can't be opened with the central locking only with the master key, ideal if you don't want the garage finding the dead hookers when you take it in for a service.fried onions wrote: ↑Sat Aug 29, 2020 8:50 pm I like the safe-like lock on the glove compartment. Do they make anything as vulgar as a towbar to fit these? I would think fitted with LPG they would be every bit of a practical caravan hauler with far more prestige than a 4x4

I've seen one towing a 'van. Mind you, not as many as those awful Bentley SUVs.
