Rusty Mercs... again!

Talk about your cars etc here. Keep it sort of sensible and on topic please.

That's grim. My W203 had the usual scabby arches but was minty underneath.

The bean counters clearly gave them two choices - the cars can look solid or be solid.....they picked the former because the scabby ones were hurting sales.

Totally shit that for a 13 year old premium car. Can you not just get them plated over in situ and punt it on ebay or faceache etc.?

I had this on an Alfa 159 a few years ago. It rotted the front subframe on an '06. I did try the warranty as it was still within the corrosion limits, but the subframes aren't covered. The new frame was over 800 quid and when it arrived you could see why it rotted. They don't even dip them in paint when you looked inside the box sections you could see clean steel. I would ask the guys fitting your rear subframe if they could get the new part dipped before fitting it or at least pump it full of waxoyl in a vain attempt to make it last. The bloody Alfa had to have one rear arm this year as that had rotted through at 700 quid each it should of killed the car off but the guy loves it and keeps pouring the money into it.

Galvanizing is cheaper than you think. Probably less than £200 to do a new subframe.

It was a while ago mind, but I think I had both my Mk1 Mini ones done for that price. Didn't stop the rest of the shit from dissolving but I bet the subframes are still holding something up somewhere.

Seriously, at Christmas it was fine (looking) though I didn't go poking about with sharp sticks or anything while the tester obviously has, you can see scratches. It seems to be just the rear subframes that do this the rest of the cars are galvanised. Subframe rots from the inside out and ,I must admit the level of fookedness is impressive!

Witness the dearth of used rear subframes for sale compared to front ones!

At least the earlier cars ust rusted their wheelarches and left the undersides alone. So is this an improvement?

I’ve seen 2009/10 cars with severe rust.
