Which? really catered for a market who's only interests were reliability and ease of use. I had a mate in the early 80s who's mum was an avid Which? subscriber and needless to say she drove a 1981 Datsun Sunny estate.

Which? road tests listed performance as sluggish, average or rapid.

My childhood was blighted by Esther Rancid quoting the editor, a Mr David Tench, at every opportunity on That's Life.

Things had improved by the mid eighties. My first car on finance was an F reg metro in 1991. It was three years old before the rust started.
